I would love to see Boom and Small lining up in slot positions.

To be honest, I was surprised at how much TP played, but I kind of enjoyed it. I don't like constantly interchanging QB's, but it is refreshing at some times.

I really want to see this team beat some ass.

TROY NOTEBOOK: Moreland eager to return to action

September 16, 2008


TROY -- Troy running back Xavier Moreland, out since breaking his collarbone in early August, is due to return this week.

Moreland wasn't expected to return until later this month. He saw limited action in practice this week and will be in full-contact situations this week leading up to Saturday's game at No. 13 Ohio State.
He's listed as Troy's second- string running back.
"Man, it's been really tough," Moreland said. "It was like a dream come true when we postponed LSU. I didn't tell them that, but I was hoping we didn't go yet. It's another game and I hadn't played anybody that big."
The Trojans pronounced themselves healthy Monday, two days after beating Alcorn State 65-0 in their home opener.
Linebacker Bear Woods missed the Alcorn game with a foot injury, though he could have played.
Cornerback Chris Bowens still has a hand injury suffered in the season opener against Middle Tennessee, but he played against Alcorn and has been demoted on the depth chart. Jorrick Calvin started last weekend and will remain there, defensive coordinator Jeremy Rowell said.
"He's just making plays," Rowell said. "(Bowens) broke his hand in the Middle game and we moved Jorrick up to that spot. That was a move we were going to make (anyway)."
Sun Belt honors: Two Troy players landed Sun Belt Conference weekly awards Monday.
Senior defensive back Sherrod Martin won the league's defensive honor after tying a school record with three interceptions -- all in the second quarter -- against Alcorn State.
Junior Sam Glusman set a school record for points by a kicker with 17 against Alcorn. He made field goals of 23, 41 and 48 yards and kicked eight extra points.

TROY FOOTBALL: Trojans look forward to facing OSU's Wells

TROY -- If the Troy Trojans get a vote, they hope Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells plays Saturday.
The Trojans (2-0) head to Ohio Stadium to face the 13th-ranked Buckeyes, but they don't know if Wells will join them.
Wells, a Heisman Trophy candidate, missed Ohio State's 35-3 loss at No. 1 Southern California last weekend with a right foot injury.
"We want that challenge," Troy linebacker Bear Woods said. "We want the whole package and he's the best. You see where you stand and where we stand as a defense. We're talking about the best running back in the nation arguably. I want the opportunity to play against him."
The Buckeyes (2-1) have struggled without Wells, who hurt himself in a 43-0 season-opening win over Youngtown State.
Ohio State scraped out a 26-14 win over Ohio University the next week before visiting Southern California.
USC held the Buckeyes to 71 yards rushing and scored the game's final 35 points. It marked the first time since 1996 that Ohio State didn't score a touchdown.
"They just ran into the best football team I've ever seen on the field," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. "I haven't seen the whole tape yet, but (USC) may hold the record for NFLers on one field for one team.
"They have about a dozen or maybe 20 of them. I don't know if Beanie had played, if it would have made much of a difference."
Wells, whose nickname came from his family, had 1,609 yards rushing last year and 15 touchdowns. He went for 222 yards against Michigan and 221 against Michigan State. Both rank among the top 10 performances in Ohio State history.

Troy readies for Buckeyes

The Troy Trojans were able to get a lot of players into the fray during last Saturday's 65-0 thumping of Alcorn State in the team's home opener. Head coach Larry Blakeney said that can only bode well for the Trojans' task of traveling to Columbus, Ohio and taking on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

"We made an early statement, especially defensively and we controlled the game throughout," Blakeney said. "And we played the twos and threes all through the second half. That was a good thing. It was good for morale and it was good to sit our other guys in preparation for what we are facing."

Blakeney and the Trojans have to deal with Ohio State coming off a 35-3 defeat at the hands of No. 1-ranked USC last week.

"Ohio State is certainly a very prideful program full of tradition," Blakeney said. "They are well-coached and they have great personnel, but they just ran into the best football team I believe I have ever seen on the field."

The Trojans will have to deal with the double-headed quarterback monster from Ohio State in senior Todd Boeckman and freshman Terrelle Pryor.

"We know what Boeckman does and we know what Pryor does, so we have to make our calls and our adjustments based on who is in the game," Blakeney said. "All defensive calls are set to stop whatever a team does through your techniques and reactions in pursuit. The thing about (Pryor) is he is so much faster to the edge and their offense is much more quarterback run, quarterback draw with him in there."

After Saturday I think that every team we play will be looking forward to playing us and Troy is the first challenge we have to face.
They now have a definitive set of films to base their plans on and we will have to gut it up and get tough, now.

I predict we leave them bruised and battered.

We played Troy last year and only beat them by 10.
It was the week after the Florida Victory and we got up early with lots of good runs by Knowshon.

They stick around though. The team doesn't quit.
I think the Buckeyes should have an easier time since their previous QB was fairly savvy and has since graduated. Jam the WR's at the line, watch for dumpoffs, bet the over...blah blah.

They're Purdue with weaker defense.

I just don't know what to expect from OSU. In our only test this year, we failed miserably. We might be a lot better than Troy, but I see no justification to take them lightly. Two unproven teams looking to make a name for themselves and establish an identity. I have no idea what to expect.

COLUMBUS ? Just what reeling Ohio State needed ? another bunch of confident Trojans.

After getting lashed by top-ranked Southern California 35-3, Ohio State has a huge task ahead just rebuilding its battered confidence.

Troy, the 13th-ranked Buckeyes? opponent on Saturday, doesn?t have that problem.

?I?ve seen the highlights of it,? Troy linebacker Bear Woods said yesterday, referring to USC?s nationally televised landslide victory over the Buckeyes. ?USC held them to 1? yards per carry.?

The Trojans ? the 2-0 ones from Troy, Ala., not the ones ranked No. 1 from Los Angeles ? believe they?ve got a shot at the wounded Buckeyes. ?It makes us real confident,? cornerback Jorrick Calvin said. ?We had a big game this week, and the offense put up some pretty good numbers. Going up there and them just losing a big game like that, I think they?ll be hurting, and they could get beat again.?

Asked if he was predicting a Troy victory, Calvin backed off, saying, ?I won?t predict anything. I?ll just predict a good game.?

The Buckeyes (2-1) returned to the practice field yesterday, most likely trying hard to push aside all the negativity surrounding the program. Practice, as usual, was closed to the media, and players were not available to speak ? also normal for a Monday.

The Buckeyes had a streak of 141 consecutive games scoring at least one touchdown snapped, dating to Nov. 23, 1996, a 13-9 loss to Michigan. It was also their worst loss since a 63-14 defeat at Penn State in 1994 ? which was also No. 1 at the time.

Larry Blakeney, the football coach for 18 years at Troy University in Alabama, has heard variations of the question before. This year, the question is this: "What are you doing playing LSU and Ohio State? They were in the national championship game last season. You've got 6,500 students on your campus."
"Everybody says (the athletic director) is trying to kill you and get rid of you because of who we play," Blakeney said in a recent interview.
"I think we've understood what it takes to climb. You've got to play those people to recruit well. We haven't played all of them, but we've played a bunch of them."
Ohio State, which plays Troy on Saturday in Ohio Stadium, is the 15th ranked opponent the Trojans have challenged since they moved to NCAA Division I-A (now the Football Bowl Subdivision) from I-AA in 2001. They are 1-13 in such games, the win at home against Missouri in 2004.
They have played 25 teams from Bowl Championship Series conferences. They are 3-22 in those games. They beat Oklahoma State at home last season and won at Mississippi State in their fifth game as a I-A program in 2001.
"We caught them a little flat," Blakeney said of Mississippi State. "But we played good. We had players, too, who were good enough to play for them or anybody else.
