Game Thread Ohio State 27, Iowa 24 (final, OT, 11/14/09) - Rose Bowl bound!!!

Iowa's defense held Wisconsin (10), Arizona (17), Iowa State (3), and Michigan State (13) to their lowest point totals all year. Also held Penn State to 10 points, which was their lowest until the Buckeyes kicked their butt.

They also gave up 28 to Michigan, 24 to Indiana, and 21 to Sun Belt member Arkansas State. On top of that, they won't have Stanzi to lead their offense to sustained drives and thus their defense won't be as rested. With a frosh QB at their helm, I see a whole lot of 3-and-outs for their offense.

The Buckeyes have a lot of pressure on them. They know, as does everyone, that if they lose this one there is going to be a lot of angry people.

If the Bucks feel a lot of pressure it will be from not wanting the seniors to go out with a loss on senior day and from the opportunity to clinch the Big Ten championship and the Rose Bowl berth. I don't think they'll be worrying about a lot of angry people.
how many times has Iowa's D faced a team that keeps its offense OFF the field? With the backup in there... their D could get exposed withe extended minutes.
Northern Iowa/Indiana/Northwestern all won the time of possesion battle. UNI/IND won by small portions(31:56/30:19) but Northwestern took over the time of possesion and dominated the end of the game(34:20). They also had 1 turnover compared to Iowa's 4. The TOP also includes back to back possession on the fumble by Stanzi picked up for a touchdown. Northwestern started the second half with drives of 4 min, 3min, 4min while Iowa's first second half drives were 3:25, 1:40, 2:55. Northwestern had the ball for 18:27 in the second half. That has to be a knock on the D knowing that running the clock was a main objective in the fourth. 24 runs to 17 pass attempts in second half.

Yeah, I know...my point was they step up in big games. All I am saying is that it is worth noting, and shouldn't just be easily dismissed. I wouldn't be surprised to see their defense play well, but I also wouldn't be too surprised if we win by 28. I just think their defense gives them a chance in this game. Not a big one, but a chance.

And there isn't pressure just on the players in this one. There is a lot of pressure on the coaching staff. I think the players will play their ass off. And if the offensive line can keep their defense off of Pryor, like they did last week, then he will have many chances to be successful. Our O-Line needs to step up to the challenge tomorrow, and I think they will.

If they still had Stanzi then I'd agree, but with an inexperienced frosh QB unable to keep their offense on the field for long I doubt their defense will be very fresh from the 2nd quarter on...

I'm starting to get nervous....last night Mark May said that this Vandenburg kid had 93 touchdowns in high school and brought up how Barclay dominated us as a freshmen in the shoe. This Mark May guy is usually spot on too [/end sarcasm]

I agree. I mean whatever May says is not only 100% correct but is a good prediction for the furture.

This is why I think, in a perfect scenario, it goes a bit like the Penn St game: Close until the 3rd Q, then OSU pulls away once the Hawkeye D is worn out. It's a recipe for classic Tresselball. Protect the football, punt and play defense, and OSU will win this one. Get sloppy, turn it over two or three times, and give up a big play, then it gets interesting.

And that's the one thing about this game that concerns me. Iowa plays a lot of that 5-under/2-deep zone, and OSU has always had the most success against that scheme with the quick passing game to the vacant spots in the zone (Smith to Gonzo on the slant accounted for 3 TDs versus them between '05-'06, and there was the sick TD pass Smith threw to Robo behind the CB's back in '06 too). Teams that score on Iowa need to pass the ball in the red zone, as they're typically pretty sound against the run. Well, Pryor's had some issues, particularly with throwing over the middle (high and/or late) that could be disasterous. Iowa will have three defenders around the ball waiting to rebound any tips if Pryor is telegraphing his throws or reverts to throwing off his back foot.

Turnover margin could be a big factor in this game. The Bucks should get a couple back from Vandenberg, so it'll likely be a wash. It's just that, right now, I think Iowa's scheme takes advantage of some of the flaws in TP's game, so TP will have to play his best game yet as a Buckeye.

Ohio State is 29-7 since 2007. That probably makes Mark May 7-29 with his OSU-related predictions.

I know he actually picked OSU to win some games in 2006.

apparently one solid last minute drive now equals domination.

finally, all this tebow hype makes sense to me.
