anybody know why this is going on?? They've been able to show the HD channel before, so why are they blacking it out now?! It's a good thing I caught this, cause I was going to set my DVR to the HD channel on ESPN, if I got 3 hours of ESPNNEWS I would have been uber [censored]ed.

This happened to me last weekend against Penn State. I was so pissed. Good thing was that you can rewind on ESPN 360, so I didn's miss any of the game.

More info on the Iowa series: 1957

t was a late star performance by sophomore fullback Bob White against unbeaten Iowa that pushed the team even further. Trailing 13-10 and on their own 32 yard line, White ran on six of the eight plays for 66 out of the 68 yards, capped off by a 5 yard touchdown run..

1958:
Ohio State was the only team to beat Iowa in 1957, so the Hawkeyes had a chip on their shoulder when they hosted the No. 16 Buckeyes on November 15. Despite their efforts, Iowa fell to Ohio State, 38-28. It was again the Hawkeyes' only loss of the season, but this year they had already clinched the Big Ten championship. Iowa sank to No. 6 in the November 17 and 18 polls.

1990: OHIO STATE 27 IOWA 26

IOWA CITY, Iowa Sixth-ranked Iowa had the chance to go 6-0 in the Big Ten for the first time in its history, but as usual, Ohio State spoiled it.

Greg Frey threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Bobby Olive with one second remaining Saturday to give the Buckeyes a 27-26 victory.

The last time the Hawkeyes started 5-0 in league play was 1958, and it was Ohio State which stopped that streak 38-28.

In 1985, the Hawkeyes won their first four Big Ten games and first seven over all, and carried the No. 1 ranking into Columbus. There the Buckeyes upset the Hawkeyes 22-13.

This is the first Buckeye game I remember watching. I was six.

For those who believe history repeats itself:

The last time Iowa played in a winner-take-all game for the Rose Bowl was in 1957 against Ohio State in Columbus:

OSU 17 Iowa 13

The next week in Ann Arbor ("meaningless game"):

OSU 31 Michigan 14

The Rose Bowl:

OSU 10 Oregon 7

'85 was also the last time that Iowa was on the cover of SI IIRC.

most spookiness

...

Iowa has been off the schedule for 2 years.

The last time we played them, we had a road game against a ranked team the week before. We won that road game (Texas) 24-7. Then we trucked Iowa.

You see where I'm going with this... We won a road game last week by that same 24-7 score: so obviously Iowa is about to get trucked. It's not like they're independent events or anything. There is spookiness at work that must be respected.

spookiness rocks

Hm. I think this was 1989. Or 1990. Greg Frey was the quarterback I believe 1988-1990.

OH BOY STATS

Last week, stats told us we were going up against the most efficient team in FBS. The Men of Scarlet and Gray didn't give two [censored]s about stats, and promptly dispatched their opponent.

This week, however, I hope stats do matter, because things are lookin' gooooooooooood:

L6L2U.gif

  • Def. PPP allowed - Iowa is ranked 15th, we're 4th.
  • Off. PPP - Iowa is ranked 80th, we're 32nd
  • Def. YPP - Iowa is 18th, we're 5th
  • Off. YPP - Iowa is 77th, we're 15th
  • OPPP/DPPP - Iowa is 29th, we're 5th
  • Victory Gap - Iowa is 26th, we're 4th
Again, an overview of what everything means:

- Offensive Points Per Play - Higher is better
- Defensive Points Per Play Allowed - Lower is Better
- OPPP/DPPP is a ratio of the above - Higher is Better
- Offensive Yards Per Point - Lower is better
- Defensive Yards Allowed Per Point - Higher is Better
- "Victory Gap" is Def. YPP minus Off. YPP and acts as a way to show how much more efficient a team is vs. its opposition. Higher is better
For all the media comparisons between 2002 OSU and 2009 Iowa, the numbers don't stack up. OSU was one of the most efficient teams across the board in 2002, even if their raw scoring numbers didn't show it. Iowa is... well, not exactly outstanding. This isn't news to Buckeye fans.

The offensive yards-per-point line is really surprising. Our offense isn't exactly the New Orleans Saints, but it does show that we do a decent job of finding the endzone on the possessions we get (defensive scoring helps this number a bit, I'm guessing). Iowa's is awful; no other way to put it. I don't know how much of this is due to their propensity to turn the ball over, or if Stanzi going down put a big hit on their efficiency. All I know is it ain't good.

In short, Iowa isn't an efficient team, and we've easily dispatched every team that is less efficient than us, save for some school in Indiana of which the game account has been erased from my memory with copious amounts of alcohol.
