Game Thread Ohio State 23, Purdue 7 (final)

This defense is unreal!

Boeckman is the only cog that still worries me a little. He'll look great at times, then not so great at other times. I guess it's just the process of maturing as a quarterback. He needs to work on putting those deep balls on a rope, the receivers are open but the pop-up throws allow the DBs to catch up and intercept that passes. Needless to say, better to make these mistakes when we are dominating a team than when it's a close game!

Go Bucks!

Nothing like a solid win that still leaves a lot of coaching points to harp on.

I don't get the sense that complacency is in this teams DNA, especially on D.

Use KSU to get as healthy as we can before the home stretch starts.

As for Purdue, how many times do people have to see good D beat good O to have faith?

With this D we will have a legit shot to win every game left on our schedule.

Im glad Todd finally paid for throwing those deep balls short and into coverage..

It happend in a 20-0 game thanfully and not in a low scoring game in Happey Valley or vs Wisconsin...

Now they can sit down and show him what he's doing wrong, and hopefully he finally realizes that Robo and Hartline can't go up and steal balls from two defenders..

We're bowl eligible!

:groove: :groove: :groove: :groove: :groove:

Also, Tressel, genius that he is, has implemented the greatest punting strategy the game has ever seen - have your QB place the ball square in the hands of the other team's DB such that it ends up on their own one yardline... FIELD POSITION!!! :smash:

Very mixed emotions coming out of this game but 6-0 is 6-0 and I can't complain with that one fucking bit. Also our defense is pretty good and stuff.

EDIT: And for the first time ever I'm a vMillionaire! :banger:

Ohio State defensive backs Chimdi Chekwa, left, and Anderson Russell corner Purdue's Dustin Keller.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Cover and hit, then cover some more.

That was the cry of the Ohio State defensive backfield going into the game last night against high-scoring Purdue. The Buckeyes stayed with it in a 23-7 victory.
It was supposed to be the biggest test of the season for the defense, especially for a still-young secondary. But redshirt freshman cornerback Chimdi Chekwa, who played most of the game in the five-man defensive backfield, set the tone with sure tackling and a timely blitz or two.
"We came out here knowing it was going to be a tough game against an undefeated team in the Big Ten," Chekwa said. "And we came with the mind-set we were going to dominate on both offense and defense.

Ohio State linebacker Austin Spitler prepares to deliver a hit to Purdue receiver Dorien Bryant.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Ohio State defense served as a giant wet blanket last night, completely smothering a fiery Purdue offense and quieting a black-clad crowd that came to party.

The Buckeyes' 23-7 victory, combined with a loss by second-ranked Southern California, should boost No. 4 Ohio State at least to third in the polls today. Ohio State tied a school record with its 17th straight Big Ten victory.
The expected showdown between the Big Ten's top-ranked offense and defense never materialized, mainly because the Buckeyes (6-0, 3-0) didn't allow it.
They didn't allow much; that's the point.
The No. 23 Boilermakers (5-1, 1-1) came in averaging nearly 500 yards and more than 45 points per game.

The Bottom Line

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Purdue has a decent Painter. Some people go for that kind of art, apparently. Others prefer sculpture, the kind in which the craftsman takes hammer to rock and makes a defensive masterpiece. Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis.
Offense (3 leaves)
They don't make your jaw go slack like the Troy-Ted-Pitt-Gonzo unit of recent seasons, and at times it looks as though the O is a rumpled shirt under the defense's suit. But they know the drill: Get a couple of scores, give it over to the D and get out of the way. Now, how bad is Beanie's ankle?

Six points

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

THE PLAY
Todd Boeckman's 26-yard touchdown pass to Ray Small. It certified OSU's goal to score on the opening drive and never look back.
THE STAR
Make it two, OSU cornerbacks Chimdi Chekwa and Donald Washington, and more because of sure tackling on short passes as the defense dominated.
THE MISMATCH
OSU's defensive front vs. the Purdue line. The Boilermakers were supposed to be balanced with a power running game, but it never showed.
