Big season by Boilers won't shock writer

Purdue is the sleeper of the 2007 Big Ten football season, writes Dennis Dodd of SportsLine.com in his college preview.
Picking the Boilermakers to finish fifth behind Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State, Dodd writes, "The Boilers will move the ball, as always. With 20 starters back and Notre Dame and Ohio State at home, Purdue could be the surprise of the Big Ten."
Dodd picks Indiana to finish eighth and Minnesota to finish last under former Central Catholic coach Tim Brewster.
"If decibels were victory, loud-talking Tim Brewster would be in the Rose Bowl right now," Dodd writes.

Big Ten Countdown - No. 5 Purdue
By Tony Gerdeman
Purdue.gif
Predicted Finish 8-4 (4-4)

Two-Cent Overview

Nearly everybody is back from a team that went 8-6 (5-3) last season. And while they did win five conference games, they didn't beat anybody of consequence. This offense is going to have to prove that it can score on the upper division of the Big Ten, because last year, they couldn't. Against Iowa, Wisconsin and Penn State, the Boilermakers scored a combined 20 points--and 17 of those came against Iowa. The defense will need to limit the shootouts and the place-kicking will have to get much better if Purdue wants to squeak out some close wins.

Still time to return
Purdue tailback Taylor out 6 weeks with broken arm

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- Purdue running back Jaycen Taylor could return from a broken arm in six weeks.

Coach Joe Tiller originally thought Taylor might be out for the season after the junior was injured Saturday in a victory over Central Michigan.

"He possibly could come back and play," Tiller said Tuesday during his weekly teleconference. "Whether or not that comes to fruition, of course, remains to be seen."

Taylor left Saturday's game for good after a 5-yard run late in the first quarter, and later found out he broke both bones in his lower arm. He had surgery on Monday, and plates were put on both bones.

Buckeyes-Boilermakers to take place under the lights

9/24/2007, 12:42 p.m. EDT The Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Ohio State will be playing in yet another primetime game at Purdue on Oct. 6, the Big Ten confirmed on Monday.
The Buckeyes, already scheduled to play under the lights on Saturday at Minnesota and at Penn State on Oct. 27, will be playing the Boilermakers starting at 8 p.m. The teams, both unbeaten so far, had to wait to announce the game time until hearing from ABC, which will televise the game.
The game was expected to be played at night but that wasn't a certainty until the Big Ten's announcement.

What I think I know going into this one:

  • Purdue runs the type of spread in which the QB is not a run threat. That is infinitly easier to defend than the true spread option with a mobile QB.
  • Toledo, EMU, CMU, Minny and ND does not get a team ready to play OSU.
  • The big and sudden step up in class effect will at least negate the initial home field advantage Purdue might have.
  • The Minny game was a perfect warm up for Purdue in every sense. It will severely limit the advantage Purdue would have had if it were our first road night game even though WL is a tougher environment.
  • Purdue is 3rd in the nation in KO return, we have not exactly covered ourselves in glory in this particular area. BE CAREFUL!!
  • Best of the 3 spread team stretch (NU, Minny, Purdue) but still a dink and dunk spread team that hopes your defensive athletes can't handle their offensive ones in space. Bad news for Purdue...they can.
All in all its another good but not great offensive team who has padded its stats on some serious cupcakes. I'll be waaayy kind and give their O 14-17 points. Now, who thinks their D can hold us to less than 21? Not me.

WL at night is certainly a tough environment but as I said above, I think the step up in class for them combined with having two road games under our belt(and the better team) is enough to negate that.

I say think Iowa 2006. Lots of noise pre game and early on, once they start playing, not so much.

I know it's been discussed in the BTN thread, but it needs to be said in this thread as a reminder. This is an ABC regional telecast, so if you live outside the state of Ohio and you want to watch the game, you will probably have to purchase ESPN Gameplan to watch it.

I was worried about this game until yesterday. No way Painter gets the kind of "Pocket Time" he had yesterday against OSU's defense and by the same token I didn't see their defense getting that much of a rush on the pickle or his replacement, especially as the game got close. Painter is not as polished as I had heard either. He overshot a lot of open receivers... do that on the Bucks and they'll be picks.

They gave up over 400 yards and 19 points to Notre-fucking-Dame's offense.

We should be able to put up over 1,000 yards, and 60 points.... </sarcasm> (Or is it?)

Yeah, and we should've been able to do that against the nation's worst defense last night but didn't.
