Boeckman throws OSU win
By JOSHUA HUDSON Tribune Chronicle Assistant Sports Editor

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. ? Ohio State might not win pretty, but in the ugly world of college football, the Buckeyes might be the hottest team in the country.

Ohio State took an early lead and rode its stifling defense all the way to a 23-7 victory over Purdue Saturday night at Ross-Ade Stadium.

The Buckeyes? victory, coupled with loss by USC, could vault Ohio State to the top of the polls.

But Ohio State coach Jim Tressel wasn?t about to get involved with any discussion about the best team in the country.

??It?s early in the season and we are only half way through,?? he said. ??We better get better if we are going to be one of the best teams in the country.??

Buckeyes steamroll Purdue
Sunday, October 7, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue had the locomotives and annoying train whistle. Ohio State left the heart of three railroad lines with the tracks. Maybe even an inside one to another national title run.

On what ESPN called gut-check Saturday, the No. 4 Buckeyes avoided getting kicked in theirs, something a team ahead of OSU failed to do. Ohio State's dominant 23-7 win over No. 20 Purdue, coupled with USC's stunning loss, will lift the Buckeyes to No. 3.

Boeckman HAS to get better in the turnover column. He reminds me a little bit of Derek Anderson of the Browns - efficient one half, a turnover machine the next. He has thrown 6 ints, countless bombs that were short allowing the defender to make up ground, and has simply dropped two balls out of his grasp! That, coupled with Wells' gimpy ankle, has the harness on this offense. When Beanie gets healthy and Todd improves, watch out.

There is no question Boeckman needs to improve his decision making on the deep ball.......the issue is he is holding the ball to long on the deep routes.....just let it fly. It is all part of his progression....he will be fine.

I see improvement from TB in a lot of area's. I think he does an excellent job of reading the defense and taking what they give him. I've been most pleased by how he consistently gets us in the right play and that is the most under appreciated skill for a QB to posses.

That said, he's still making the same fundamental mistakes he's made since week 1. Taking too long on the deep stuff, not looking off the safety and too much air on the ball.

I don't see any real improvement from week 1 to week 6 so I'm not so enthusiastic to say "he'll just get better" in that area. Teams are now going to see it plain as day when they prepare for us. The good news is outside of PSU, no one left on our regular season schedule has what I would consider a real stout defense.

We still have a lot of good things going on as far as the offense is concerned, I'm not gloom and dooming but a gimpy Beanie gives teams a chance to focus harder on TB and thats obviously not a good thing. He still has some major limitations a real good D(like say a Bowl opponent) could exploit.

Todd will get better. I am one of those that believes in the "mistakes leads to learning and improvement" scenario. He is going to do things like that to get a feel for what he can and cant do. The boy can throw the ball, there is no doubt about that. His deep passes are there, just either too high, or to the wrong side of the receiver. The pass to Hartline was a TD, if he simple threw the ball to the inside of the field. The other 2, just had way too much air, and thrown too late. Robo is one of those receivers that you can normally count on to go up and take those away from the corner, but when you allow the safetly to come over, it is going to be much more difficult. One thing I noticed is that, in the second half, we all but abandoned the short pass.......which Todd made look easy in the first half. We either ran off-tackle, or threw deep. But I would rather have him get that out of his system before we play at Happy Valley or Ann Arbor. He should be able to improve drastically over the next 2 weeks.

I cant say enough about this defense. The ONLY thing it lacks is a great pass rush from the D-line. Of course it doesnt help when Gholston has no jersey or pants left after the game is over from being held so much. I love the corner blitzes. I love the linebackers blitzing. When you have the secondary that ours is developing into, you dont necessarily have to get a sack, just get in there enough to rush the QB........there is NOT going to be a receiver open enough to hurt us. Freeman is really starting to come around, and I am so glad to see that. He single-handedly shut down their running game last night. You didnt hear JL's name much last night, because he didnt have to do anything, and that is amazing when you think about it. We knew Jenkins was our shut down corner.........then you add Donald Washington into that equation, and we seem to have 2 of them......wow.

I am absolutely not saying that we're gonna win out, and play for another NC, but if we can get healthy on offense, and get Todd more comfortable, we can play with absolutely anybody.

Now my fingers hurt and must go ice them.........god I love football, and god I love the Buckeyes

Purdue, that is.
After Saturday night's nationally televised beat down by Ohio State, the Boilers once again revealed themselves as the perpetual Others Receiving Votes team.
Good enough to roll up 50 points per game on Toledo and Minnesota and IU. Good enough to be 5-0 with victories over teams who were a combined 4-16. Good enough to earn an annual spot in one of college football's secondary bowl games, usually the Sun Bowl, which keeps the athletic department bean counters happy.
Not nearly good enough to beat, much less compete, with the nation's big dogs, specifically Ohio State, which could be looking at a top-two national ranking later today.
They are who we thought they were.

It was obvious to everyone who he(TB) was trying to go to deep.(Robo)
Purdue did a great job game planning to take Robo on the deep stuff, away. And Purdue's defense is way better than I thought.
All our opponents will look at the Purdue tape and see how to defend us now.

Bottom line is we better adjust on offense. Being great on defense will not win every game. We have some real battles coming up.

I don't know what everyone was saying about the stadium being horrible, i didn't think it was really too bad at all, sure there is better, but I didn't think it was bad. The seats were a little crunched, smaller than Ohio Stadium it felt, but we had great seats on the 45 yard line.

I love being a buckeye and traveling well. I got a cell phone video of O-H-I-O going around about a 1/3 of the way through the 3rd quarter.. walking into the stadium felt like a home game.. and the crowd was out of it quick.

My thoughts on the game from my vantage point..

It's impossible to run on our defense, they had negative rushing yards heading into the last drive i think, did they end up negative?

Our DBs are deep and good, as are our linebackers.. very impressive showing from the defense, I still think we should be bringing a tad bit more pressure than we are.. but I can't bitch about a shutout until the last 10 seconds..

Wait, yes I can.. What the hell!!? I understand the logic in the prevent (even though it rarely works outside of NCAA 2008) and I understand the logic in playing our backups (Weis v. Tressel philosphy) but if you're going to get those guys valuable playing time, why not call real game-situation calls? I really wanted that shut-out.

Offensivley, maybe it was diffrent from the TV set, but I felt the game was managed poorly and poorly executed after the first quarter. Maybe JT shut it down to keep everything off film for our upcoming schedule.. but idk, we could of easily (i felt) hung 33+ points, and jumped Cali to #2.

TB went to the well 3 too many times  it was like either we ran the ball, or threw a bomb with nothing inbetween. They hit hartline over the middle, he broke a tackle, and picked up 20 some yards.. inconsitent play is still haunting him, and in a tight ball game, this is worrying me..

All-in-all, solid victory. I'm bitching about a 23-7 win on the road at night to a ranked big-10 team.. It's good to be a buckeye. :oh:
