What was supposed to be an early knockout turned turned into a wrestling match of almost historic proportions in Ohio Stadium today before third-ranked Ohio State made off with a 26-14 victory over Ohio University. The Bobcats, who still have never beaten a ranked team in 14 tries, were pushing for an upset that would have been the first by an in-state school over OSU since 1921 and would have shook the national picture to its foundation. The Buckeyes, whose star tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells sat out as his right foot healed, play next Saturday night at top-ranked Southern California, which was idle today.
Ohio State might have limped in, too, had it not been for the quick right hand of Shaun Lane. He grabbed a punt, muffed by Ohio's Mark Parson, at the Ohio 25-yard line with 58 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Buckeyes, trailing 14-12 at the time, punched in a touchdown, with Brandon Saine plunging 1 yard behind fullback Curtis Terry to take the lead for the first time, 19-14 with 14:00 left.

Columbus - The victory didn't feel much like one, although the little-known quarterback named Boo only scared Ohio State instead of turning its dream season into a pumpkin Saturday.
Midnight could be coming soon, though.
Mighty, top-ranked Southern California, next Saturday's opponent at the Los Angeles Coliseum, cannot have been impressed by the Buckeyes' 26-14 victory over an in-state Mid-American Conference team. Ohio University led at halftime and after three quarters, at that. Nothing about it felt like a fluke.


The Buckeyes have 27 seniors and a sizeable list of players who postponed rich NFL signing bonuses to try one more time to win it all. But Ohio's backup quarterback, Boo Jackson, playing because starter Theo Scott was knocked out of the game early, was the best player on the field.
"OU deserved this game," said Ohio State junior wide receiver Brian Hartline, who unfortunately did his part by dropping a touchdown pass. "Ray Small made a play on special teams, but I really don't know how we pulled this game out."

Ohio State Football: OSU 26, OU 14

Ohio State survived a defensive battle, survived without running back Beanie Wells and survived a scare, surging back from a third-quarter deficit to top Ohio University 26-14 Saturday afternoon.
The No. 3 Buckeyes patched together the victory with Heisman Trophy candidate Wells hobbled by a right big toe injury, instead watching the game from the sideline while perched atop a bench.
Wells and the rest of the sellout crowd at Ohio Stadium saw OU claw to a 7-6 halftime lead, the Bobcats' offense led by quarterback Boo Jackson, who replaced starter Theo Scott after he left in the first quarter with a left shoulder injury.
Most of the crowd then sat stunned when Ohio grabbed a 14-6 lead with 8:58 left in the third quarter. A high shotgun snap on third-and-2 from the OSU 14 sailed over the head of OSU quarterback Todd Boeckman and into the end zone. Boeckman leapt atop the loose ball, but Ohio's Noah Keller knocked the ball free and the Bobcats' Curtis Meyers recovered for the touchdown.
But a bit of good fortune and some savvy retun play helped Ohio State storm back for the victory.

good and bad

The bad:
-The lack of a "push" from the offensive line.
-O linemen standing around before the play is over many times in our backfield.
-Receivers not creating enough separation
-Pryor slowing down when contact is coming.
-not capitalizing on turnovers.
-The defense not finishing sacks

The good:
-Ray Small
-Forcing turnovers
-The DB's did not drop any INTs
-Boom Herron showing emotion (not many others do)
-Great pressure by the D-line
I think the one thing this game says to PfC is Pryor is not going to play a major role next week. He saw time early in the game like last week, but not again till the end, I have to believe this was because the game was close. In a game like USC, I do not think he is going to see much action.

All Im gonna say is that I hope this is their let down game for the year. They seem to have one every year. I remember when they won the national championship, they had let downs vs Cincinnati, and Michigan State.

Hats off to Ohio University for playing an awesome game. Their D and O lines played their butts off. They out played OSU for 3 1/2 Quarters.

If they show up like this and play slow motion next week, we will see a wax job like you have never seen. USC is loaded, they are fast, and they are physical. I am very disappointed in the effort today, however they are 2-0.

I used to live in Omaha and Solich is a good coach. Remember he took Nebbie to a championship game and was part of Osbourne's staff when they won back to back in the '90's. Solich and his staff did a great job scheming this game........

Yes we had a scare this week and we play to day the least a little unmotivated. Remember every team has one of those games or a bad game every now and then. Remember USC and Stanford last year? Stanford was expected to lose big time and they beat USC. Well see come next week.

Its tuff being a buckeye fan in Cali. Tired of hearing about USC and the Pac-10. I'm sure OCbuckfan can understand, especially being in southern Cali. After going to the Rose Bowl last year Illinois didn't help.

I think the key to winning next week is playing OUR game and making USC adjust to how we are playing not the other way around.

Well see next week, but I am confindent that the BUckeyes we know will be there....

Not even going back to read it.

What people need to remember is that the key cog to this offense was out today. I'm not sure why JT didn't stay with the hot hand in Herron throughout, but I can understand wanting to get everyone PT before USC. I'm still not sold that TB has made significant improvement over last season.

College football is completely different from one week to the next. With Beanie back, the offense should look completely different. This game obviously doesn't give me a "warm fuzzy" about next week, but anything can happen on any given Saturday. I feel Beanie is gonna be an absolute warrior next week though, and that makes me feel better.

One big plus, Ray-Ray looks like he is finally beginning to realize all that potential. It looks like the light may have finally gone on. We need him big time next week because thus far, it really looks like the Brian's are having trouble getting seperation.

That spark needs to come from a WR not Pryor. 4-5 dropped passes today, and no one can get open.

Also I think our personnel packages are all jacked up too. Herron should've been in the game after his TD drive that he was in on. He was that spark that drive, and he should've been rewarded with extra playing time.

The pass defense was very good today, but the run defense needs to straighten out or next week its gonna be embarressing. Hell a lot of things need to straighten out, and mainly the attitude of this team. I know the players reflect the coach but the whole "this is business" approach needs to change to "I'm pissed and I wanna hurt someone" approach starting next week.
