Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

I'm not trying to compare programs, tradition, talent or scheme or anything like that. But I'm watching the Florida/Miami game and see a slight comparison to what happened in this game earlier today.

Both schools have a good majority of their players coming from their respective states. My point is some of these guys have played against each other in high school and the urgency to prove that other in state school a little something should not be taken lightly.

Miami has brought the fight to Florida and OU did the same to the Bucks today. Totally different games right now but the way those OU kids brought it and the way the Miami kids have managed that atmosphere in the swamp (now they get a punt blocked for a safety) is comparable. Don't kill me for this, I'm just sayin...

oh yeah and FUCK M*CH*G*N!!!!

You are a better poster than that lowblow.

I hope so too, just one of the buffoons I guess. Blame it on the sun, and a long ride home. I have the greatest respect for Coach Tressel. Should have used the sarcasm font. My apologies. Like most peaple that saw the game (I'm watching the recording as I type), there was something lacking. A certain fire. I really think the coach has the responsibility to prepare the team and not allow them to look too far forward. I am not a fair weather fan, I stand in all adversity with this team. I stand today. Some posters don't want to here the truth or at least my skewed view of it. I'm taking a deep breath now and won't go off the deep end with this. Sorry if it was misunderstood.

Respectfully, UTgrad

Why can't there be disscussion of the Good and the Bad! I like to read the insights from the INTELLIGENT posters. IT does not affect how JT coaches or how the players play. If were just gonna say we have 22 All-americans and OU was lucky, the refs were bad we become a SEC website?

Show me where intelligent discussion has been hindered? Anywhere?

The only thing we censor is the bashing and cheapshots on coaches/players.
If that is your idea of intelligent discussion, well I guess this isn't your type of site.

Christ, nobody has said the team played well today...but when things go wrong, we don't need 200 posters having kneejerk seizures and screaming "Boeckman sucks!!"

That will not change. Ever. If that is not up to your standards, feel free to take your business elsewhere.

No kidding. Take that crap to the scout boards where there are countless threads for it. They're already predicting death and destruction in LA. I cannot believe how many people cannot grasp how severely the college football game swings from week to week.

That's what I meant you have to scroll through pages of bashing etc. to find the intelligent posts...maye there should be a rant thread for those just blowing off steam

The Radio Was Interesting on the way back

Saw a few folk at the game I know - including a certain sports photographer lurking at the bottom of the ramps near the stadium exit - still sporting a nifty T-mount lens camera, with a massive white lens. Good gear Josh.

After getting back to the car and beginning the drive home I had plenty of time to leisurely listen to 1460 the Fan - which sounded like a suicide hotline. This was driven by the hosts noting that they were scared about the upcoming USC game after this afternoon's performance. Despite Spielman's confident (and reasonably argued) assertion that the Buckeye team that shows up next week will be more focused, better executing and let's face it, with a greater proportion of it's top personnel on hand, the show's hosts pumped the suicide pills.

Which lead to one of the more surreal pieces of aural theater I've heard on the airwaves.

A caller piped in asserting that Tressel is overrated, that he is overpaid, that the Miami victory was an aberration, that the Buckeyes have always feasted on a weak Big 10 and always failed under Tressel against any quality team, that the Buckeyes would get annihilated in LA by 'SC - no doubt and that it would be humiliating - the end of his season, period no doubt about it.

You get the idea - BuckNuts of old on air. A distillation of every negative thought expressed about this game, in person, face-to-face or on a message board here - or in other internet Buckeye havens.

And it was total horseshit.

It ignored ND in '05, the return game with Texas in Austin in '06, the The Game for The Ages, Memoriam to Bo and Woody - Everything on the Line 1 vs. 2 tOSU vs. TSUN game, let alone the times tOSU acted as effective giant-killers to a flying high TSUN team under JT's leadership.

It ignored the estimable job JT and the rest of the coaches do - each and every day - to get our student-athletes to live up to the full meaning of both parts of their titles - students and athletes.

It ignores all these good things and many more because, aside from being pure horseshit, the callers take is myopic, short-sighted and reactive.

Does that mean I would disagree with the primary cause of the caller's distress - the quality of play today? No. I would not disagree with that. This was as poorly played and oddly officiated a game as I can remember. One TD for OU gifted by an errant snap. Earlier one touchdown drive for OU continues despite what seemed to be obvious holding on a pursuing defender (Wilson as I recall). Defenders left gaps open through which the OU QB racked up his hefty yard per carry total for the day. Tackling was apparently a missing art-form for much of the day. Wide Receivers were either too little open, when open were not found by Boeckmann, or when found and thrown to did not catch the ball. (Robiskie looks somewhat less than his self from last year). Herron was underutilized after showing he had the heart, heft and guts to get the job done on the ground.

And you know who else agrees with him on that? Jim Tressel, that "over-paid" win nothing but the easy ones coach that was the voodoo doll for the caller's barbs. Immediately following the game his interview contained this basic message - quoted, though not verbatim:

We played badly as a team. We played below our potential individually and collectively and - we coached below our potential and abilities - individually and collectively.
That part of it - along with the take responsibility tone of every other player asked - tells me that things will be different next week. Even if there are no new personnel from this game.

But, guess what, new personnel will likely be there.

Wells will be back.

Back also will be important help in the defensive field.

Perhaps we will also see some of the other, promising, young receivers return to the field - just in case Robo is suffering from an achy-breaky shoulder that limits his abilities.

Last - and on another completely different note - a tip of the hat to my favorite player from todays game.

One Lawrence Wilson.

That kid was impressive in getting pressure, impressive in tipping the errant pass to himself for the early interception. Impressive purely in his athleticism. This kid will be really, really damned good - this year.

Yeah I post on scout and it's really getting ridiculous. I can't believe the way some people are reacting. In the scoring prediction thread the majority of OSU fans have OSU losing by 15 points or more. It's not the end of the world. OSU still won but played porrly. It happens and I think that they'll be ready for USC next week.

I agree and think this is a good point. Miami has more talent than OU, but the game is being played at Florida and people expected UF to roll. It just doesn't always happen like people think. OSU played a crap game and it happens, I got upset, but by the time I got home I wasn't thinking that the season was down the tube like some others. That's just a ridiculous reaction.

This is college football and the main reason it is so exciting and getting more and more popular.

That's what the scout boards are for. We don't like that garbage around here. Clarity had a very specific vision when creating this site and we do our best to keep that going.

Criticism is accepted, but there's a fine line. I see people who can stay behind the line and do fine. There's a difference between "Today wasn't what I expected, maybe JT was keeping some cards in the deck" and "what was that shit today? We're lucky to have won, we are so fucked next week!!!" Which was where this thread was headed.

This is our team, this is The Ohio State Buckeyes, and no one here wants to see these forums turn into the ESPN forums, even if they are much easier to understand!
