Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

For those of you returning home from the game and feel you didn't get your money's worth, have a couple of beers, watch the end of the UF-Miami game and sleep it off.

I think this game has more to do with early season rust more than anything else. Remember in '03 when we bared escaped SDST at home? That turned out to be a powerful team that had a number of key players emerging late in the season (Carter and Holmes) and buried Kansas State in the bowl game. Even Beanie was visibly rusty in the first few games last season. We'll be ready to play SC. Count on it.

I don't care about the opponent. A bad team loses that game, a good team wins. This team won. When we needed a play, we got one. We had four picks, all of them were very, very huge. Small's punt return was not only freakin' insane, it was made at the perfect time. The fumble recovery. The key stops on defense.

I'm not saying this was a good game by any means, but we made plays when we needed, and we came back in the fourth quarter. That experience is much more valuable than the experience that USC has had this week/year.

We'll be ready.. there are some things that need worked on and I have a feeling they'll get worked on.

Good win. :oh:

Just that your contention that tOSU's defense played a "good game" is wrong, imo. Even without the turnovers, had that D played closer to it's capabilities, OU would not have had 14 points.

Half of those 14 points don't belong around the D's neck.

They did play a good game. A great game? Maybe not. But a good game, no doubt.

I'm still excited about our odds next week but the only thing that has me worried is the fact that we're making the same errors over and over. We've never been great at stopping full out spread offenses and once again we struggle with a team who's QB is mobile (Illinois/Penn State=scary). Which is why this week USC may be more tailor made for our defense. Physical bunch, but not much mobility from the QB spot.

Also remember Washington/O'neal come back from suspension next week so I wonder how much they are going to play? IMO you gata get Washington on the field he's a talent but who would we sit? I really like Hines as a saftey and to be honest he's stood out more so than say Coleman I think. Not to mention he's a good 15-20 pounds heavier with the same speed. I thought Homan Struggled today and was picked on by OU anyone else notice that?

Hope so. Sanchez is much like Todd, if you give him all day to pass he'll move the ball. Get pressure on him and it's anyone's guess what will happen.....

We have to remember that Ohio got their big plays on busted plays and flukes today. As bad as it sounds to say, Ohio got very lucky a couple of times.

That said, the D needs to tackle better and they need to get more penetration at the point of attack. another thing I noticed from the stands today is that Ohio was isolating JL (generally with a guard, but sometimes on a combo block), much like Minnesota and Illinois did last year. Homan missed a tackle that I think people are remembering, but his presence allowed the safeties to fill very well IMO.

Look, I'm GLAD this game happened as it did. After the fluke TD on the fumble that made the game 14-6, a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TEAM TOOK THE FIELD. This is important, IMO, because they (as a team) haven't done that since 2002. There was nothing that was going to stop them from scoring. They didn't do this against Florida, they sure as hell didn't do it against Illinois and it never happened against LSU either. They played like a team with nothing to lose, but a team with a purpose and a sense of urgency too.

I did. I definitely thought he was not getting downhill into his fits and then hewas catching the runner. However, that is what the zone does to aggressive LBs...it slows them down by forcing them laterally.

Ross will learn from this game and be better for it.

I don't agree that the D played a good game. Now, I'm not going to start pointlessly slamming the team (like I heard all afternoon on the radio), but I was not pleased with the way the D played. Too many open receivers (luckily balls weren't on target), too many wide open running lanes, too much confussion before the snap, and not nearly enough 3-and-outs. Sure, they got the job done when it counted, but let's just say that there's PLENTY of "good film" to build off of.

The O was probably even worse. The o-line improved greatly over the game, but it started from a miserable spot on the first few drives so I guess improvement was inevitable. Herron was a bright spot. So was Small. Robo and Hartline had an off day to say the least, and their inability to create separation is becoming a recurring concern for me. Even against YSU, they didn't create much separation... Boeckman needs a sense of urgency. I'm not bashing the guy, and I do believe he is the right choice at QB, but he still has issues with his internal clock. You could even sense an increased sense of urgency on the Bucks' first TD drive (which, sadly, was IN THE THIRD QUARTER!!!), and as a result, Boeckman looked much more crisp. He stepped up in the pocked. He went through progression faster and more confidently. He ran when the time was right. Basically, he was a more effective QB.

Again, I'm not here to bash the team or any individual players, but I'm not going to sugarcoat things and say that any win is a good win. Not true. Some wins are bad wins. Some wins are just plain ugly wins. Lets face it - this win was a butt-face nasty, chew-your-arm-off-in-the-morning-cause-it's-caught-under-the-pillow kind of a win. I'll take it cause I have no choice, but as Tressel would say, there's a lot of work to do before next Saturday.

There is good news though. Other wins that felt like this:

Illinois 2006 - That was a DAMN good Buckeye team...
SDS 2003 - Again, another BCS Buckeye team that ended with a convincing win in the Fiesta Bowl
Ciny 2002 - I can't remember how this team fared, but I've heard it was good.

And for the record, the 2004 Buckeye team lost this type of game (Northwestern still [censored]es me off).
