Official Opt-Out Thread 2021-2022 Bowl Season

Thought of this while reading the 11W article on the Rose Bowl. Is there any reason why the bowls can't use NIL to pay players directly to play in their bowls? The big bowls at least have plenty of cash to spread around and it might seem like a good investment to ensure the best of each team is playing in their bowl.

I'm wondering if that's why we haven't heard anything from Olave or Wilson yet...

That's fucking brilliant.

Players can very easily get a Lloyds of London insurance policy for the Bowl Game. Dunno the cost but if you're that sure you're gonna make a gazillion it shouldn't be a deal breaker

According to an old Jake Butt article, the schools can even pay for it too:

There are NCAA rules that allow athletics department officials to help secure policies and there are also funds available at each university that can be used to pay for the insurance policies if the programs want to allocate money for that purpose.

The student assistance fund is money provided to every university by the NCAA that can be used for a variety of scenarios to help student-athletes financially for everything from travel for funerals to formula for babies. The NCAA allows universities to pay for the insurance policies out of this fund, but not every university chooses to do so. Texas A&M, for example, paid $50,000 from this fund to help offensive lineman Cedric Ogbuehi secure insurance. Butt and his family secured loans to pay for the premium instead of using the student assistance fund at Michigan.

or how about a "NIL deal" that they will use the money to buy their own insurance?

The Bowl Games should be expected to cover the cost of the insurance policies for any draftable players that will participate in their games. If they want the ratings and the draw for those star players, they should be paying for covering the risk for those players.

That insurance policy still isn't worth the risk.

Jake Butt got $400K from his policy, earned another career $2.6m from the Broncos as a fifth rounder, and was out of football after a whole career of eight games following a repeat of the injury in 2019 (fifth rounders are a lot more expendable than second rounders).

Had he skipped the Orange Bowl and got drafted at the bottom of the Top-50 picks (mid second) where he was frequently projected, he'd have earned over $3m guaranteed and likely pockets another $2-3m in game checks if he simply remains a healthy scratch behind Heuerman.

Injuries, talent, bust, whatever you want to call it, all things being equal and only having one contract to go off of, playing in the Orange Bowl conservatively cost him over $3m in lifetime earnings. Arguably way, way more if he enters the NFL on two healthy knees and makes it to the second contract.

Everchanging bowl game odds: Kenny Pickett and the high-stakes guessing game between bookmakers and bettors

This time of year, bettors fire $10,000 and $20,000 limit bets at sportsbooks sometimes based on educated hunches that a star quarterback such as Pittsburgh's Kenny Pickett may opt out of a bowl game. Other times, well-connected bettors have the inside scoop from, for example, talkative alumni who like to spread the news before it hits the media.

To stay ahead, bookmakers are tasked with determining not only which players are in or out but also which bettors have the goods and which ones are just guessing. It's not easy.

"It's turned into wait and see what piece of information is going to blow up on some random Tuesday, where you have to move the line three or six points," Matt Metcalf, sportsbook director for Circa Sports, said.

"I got the horse right here..."

Good news for us YouTube TVers. We can't watch any of this anyway.

Again, another thing that’s obviously the better/smart move for the players but is a kick in the nuts for fans. Bowl games, once one of the best part of the season are becoming watered down, meaningless exhibitions absent many of the best players on the teams. I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but the new CFB world we are wading into sucks.

Every week of the normal season is fun, but I always loved bowl season the most. Holiday time, games every day, interesting conference matchups. Big opt outs kill the buzz.
