Official Opt-Out Thread 2021-2022 Bowl Season

That insurance policy still isn't worth the risk.

Jake Butt got $400K from his policy, earned another career $2.6m from the Broncos as a fifth rounder, and was out of football after a whole career of eight games following a repeat of the injury in 2019 (fifth rounders are a lot more expendable than second rounders).

Had he skipped the Orange Bowl and got drafted at the bottom of the Top-50 picks (mid second) where he was frequently projected, he'd have earned over $3m guaranteed and likely pockets another $2-3m in game checks if he simply remains a healthy scratch behind Heuerman.

Injuries, talent, bust, whatever you want to call it, all things being equal and only having one contract to go off of, playing in the Orange Bowl conservatively cost him over $3m in lifetime earnings. Arguably way, way more if he enters the NFL on two healthy knees and makes it to the second contract.
Do the insurance policies cover the difference between contract value of reasonably expected draft position and where you end up?
If so it’s pretty big for anyone expected to be a first rounder or high first rounder, considering Butt could have ended up anywhere from late 2-4. The 4 year salary drop between late 2 and late 5 is 1.5 mil at most. His insurance policy was for difference between mid 3rd and he collected over 500k. Between mid 3 where he probably would have ended up and 5 is about 1 mil. Signing bonus a few hundred thousand different.
Conservatively I would say that playing in the bowl game cost him a few hundred thousand in total salary. Such as if he ended as a flop anyhow or was still knocked out for the injury he sustained in the nfl. He reaggrivated the acl twice and was finally knocked out by a hamstring.
On the high end it could have cost him tens of millions if he turned into a pro bowler, but who knows.
3 mil total in earnings over 4 years is still life changing and typical earnings for most day 2 picks.

I think the policies are a great idea and definitely think the schools should buy policies for anyone expected to be in the top 3 rounds.

Are we going to start seeing players opt out when their season is out of contention?
Like team gets knocked out in week 10. Why bother with the rest of the season? What's different between bowl game and end of regular season if the games are "meaningless"?

Given the financial reward for any individual award below the level of the Heisman, given the financial incentive to play in any end of the season "rivalry game" above the level of Wabash - DePauw, yes.

We could. Absolutely. It's the same principal.

I think that, ultimately, it gets policed by the NFL GMs. They will give feedback in terms of draft position/evaluations/etc as to what point they consider sitting out to mean you aren't a "team guy" kind of thing. Feels like the current unwritten rule is just Bowl games.

So, still no word on any Buckeyes opting out of the Rose Bowl? They flew to CA last night (I think?) and are there now. If anyone was opting out, wouldn't they have done it before now?
For what it's worth:
Helwagen appeared on MarkRogersTV on Thursday and said he’s been told Wilson has not been seen at practice. Earlier this month Wilson said he was undecided on playing and was going to have discussions with his family.

Helwagen also said it appears defensive tackle Haskell Garrett and left tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere will not play as well. He made it clear that nothing is official and we should be hearing something from Ryan Day early in the coming week.

The good news is, Helwagen is reporting Chris Olave has been taking part in practice. While I’d like to believe that is a sign he is definitely going to play, keep in mind cornerback Denzel Ward waited until the day of the Cotton Bowl to announce his decision a few years ago.

While I support any player’s right to opt out I would hope the coaching staff is informed far enough in advance to prepare other guys

Same here. I would ask at the beginning of Bowl prep and ask that they be a man and call the ball.

Fully support you if you decide to sit out but do me the courtesy and don't take reps with the 1's and then decide to sit out. That's bullshit.

This for sure. With four major players now opting out, I hope the coaches were aware.
