Official Cleveland Browns Draft Thread

C'mon skidoo - they definitely overpaid - whether Browns fans want to accept that or no. And, qualitatively it was a huge overpayment. Ballsy in fact.

The value of the #22 1st round pick they acquired was 780 points.

For which they gave up the 2008 #1 pick say it is Rd1 (8), a realistic proposition, that is 1400 points, plus those 540 points for the 2007 #4 Round 2 pick. Total of 1940 points.
Less the value of the #22 pick, leaves 1160 points - the value of a lucky 1st round #13 pick.

The defense here should never be that it was not overpaid, but that it was ballsy.

Ballsy or gross mismanagement... depends on what spin you want to put on it. Given the front office we have, well... it's obvious where I'm leaning anyway. Guess we'll find out next year. But if there was a vbet on Crennel getting fired -- I'd be all in right now.

I will say this... before the draft, Quinn's smug attitude annoyed me to no end. I can pull up a post I made during the combine that included some quotes about why he'd like to go to Cleveland and such -- but right now on this interview on NFLN, he seems much more humbled and I'm more inclined to deal with him.
What's done is done, and despite some of my (oft sarcastic) comments, I'm not throwing the Browns to the curb anytime soon. But if his attitude reverts back to the smug bs... I'll have a hard time rooting for him and Braylon. (I honestly think Kellen's attitude has improved a lot in the past year). On the attitude issue -- I don't like the Wright pick for that very reason. Seems to me the locker room is already conflicted, bringing in Wright could backfire big time.

I absolutely love the pick of Eric Wright. He's the best cornerback in this draft. And we're not talking about recent character issues with him. He fucked up, had to go to UNLV, and since has capitalized on his immense talent. I truly believe he was the steal of the draft.

I can't say much about the pick of Joe Thomas, because the Browns would have been making a mistake by NOT drafting him. They took the best trenches guy in the draft because they had to. I'm looking forward to finally having an offensive line protect whatever quarterback is back there.

Brady Quinn: This is Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel putting their jobs on the line. It's no secret that I think Quinn is likely to be a bust. But IF he pans out, this will be one of the best drafts ever by any team. Everyone saying that the Browns were going QB next year anyway are really selling Charlie Frye short. With an offensive line, I really believe that Charlie is going to show people something this year.

I think Lerner wanted Quinn as much if not more than Savage and Crennel. That might actually buy them an extra season. I loved the Thomas pick and I'm not sure what to make of the trade. I am anti Quinn, but I think I'm going to give them a season to show me this was a good move. I'm trying to figure out how well the Browns need to play this year to make it a good trade. I think they need to get outside of the top 15. All they really could use now is some help at DE or NT and maybe RB.

Fuck. I wanted them to draft Troy in the next round or two.

Is it really worth it to not only give up your second round pick, but then your first round from next year? What if that pick next year is a top 10? that basically would destroy any of the value they just banked in on.

IF Troy is drafted at all....

Edit: With 2 picks, the Bears take a guy from Louisiana-Monroe and a guy from New Hampshire.

It unfortunately doesn't look good.

What do you guys think about the Wright pick?

Sketchy. It was a good move from the perspective that we needed another CB and he was probably the only one left that could start in the near future in a year thats very shallow at that position. But on the other hand, I'm not sold that his character issues are behind him yet.

So who is going to be the RB next year?

And what if LeCharles Bentley can't come back?

Or if the Defense still needs 8 NFL caliber players?

This was probably the worst move Phil could've made.

Next Year's RB class is going to be very deep, too deep to be giving up your first rounder.

psst heres a secret, the team was going to suck this year anyway and tank until romeo got fired.

a good RB isn't hard to find (look at all the guys that switched teams this year) bentley is done though, although we just gave fraley an extension

the defensive line is still poor but our CBs are solid now with wright and a young pair of safeties. LBs are very young with a lot of upside.

phil realized that we would be drafting a QB in the first next year and took quinn at 22 (amazing value + we don't have to pay him top 5 $$$).

quinn is better than any QB coming out next year, phil made the right choice.
