Official Cleveland Browns Draft Thread

I've always liked Hoge's analysis. The guy does study a lot of tape, and not the televised shit that we get stuck with. He studies a lot of what they call "the coaches tape", which shows the whole play and you can actually see everything develop. I love it when people claim to know about a certain player when they've "watched" the games. You don't even see a third of what goes on on any given play, unless it's a run, and I'm supposed to listen to their expert opinion?

Went and visited family in Cleveland for easter, they seem to think Joe Thomas first round, Stanford QB 2nd round.. when i said why not get CJ he said recievers in the NFL are a dime a dozen
Agreed but NFL recievers who actually catch the ball in a Browns uniform are not a dime a dozen. I would love to see CJ with the Browns. Would not mind Russel or Joe Thomas either because I think they could help the team. Anyone but Brady Quinn. I have not heard anything about the Stanford QB but I would think there are much better options at the position such as Drew Stanton. I am not a huge fan of Stanton but I believe he is better than any of the QB's Stanford has had in a while. GO BUCKS AND GO BROWNIES!

When Phil Savage calls me later this month... I'm tellin him JOE THOMAS... cuz I would finally like to see what a QB could do that isn't running for his life on every down...

I miss the days of Doug Dieken... :(
Agree 100%. It would not be the sexy pick but anyone who has a brain in their body knows that it all starts up front. We need strong lines if we want to be a good team. I think they have done a good job this offseason in addressing some of the line concerns but they still have work to do.

Exactly. Fuck that "best available" bullshit...you draft to fill your needs. You can have the best QB, WRs, and RBs in the world but they won't mean shit if they don't have time to throw the ball, to run their routes, or to find running lanes (if there even lanes in the first place).

I too would like to see what a QB would do with a line that not only allows a running game to be present but also time in the pocket. Unfortunately, I do not think Joe Thomas is worthy of being the #3 pick and the money that comes with the #3 pick. He may be the best tackle available in THIS draft, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the Browns should draft him because of that. Now if we are talking about an Orlando Pace, then he would be worthy of the #3 pick and the money that comes with that.

It seems that Savage has tried to address the o-line the past 2 years via free agency and that may be his MO as a GM.

Taking AP or CJ with the #3 is quite intriguing. With CJ, the Brownies would have a formidable WR corp; with AP a potential HR threat in the backfield and a decent 1-2 punch with Lewis.

Even though I don't agree with it, I'd be fine with Joe Thomas since it would help the o-line. The one pick that would cause me grief is selecting Brady Quinn. It's great he grew up a Browns fan and all, but I can't see wasting a 1st round, a high 1st round pick, on him. Hell, if he is still on the board when the Browns pick in the 2nd round, then maybe picking him would be fine.

I listened to Merrill Hoge the other day talk about both Russell and Quinn and he stated that it is "laughable" that Quinn and Russell are even being compared (as in there is no comparison: Russell is special, there will be another Brady Quinn available next year).

He went on to say that with all the tape he has seen of Brady Quinn, he would have a hard time even drafting him in the second round. Questioned his intangibles and his accuracy.

Now this could have been Hoge trying to stir the pot, but I'm not sure what he has to gain by that. I just found it interesting that this guy (who knows the game) is seeing this when nobody else seems willing to put that out there.

By the way, I completely agree with him. If the Browns use the number 3 on Quinn it tells me that they aren't interested in winning any time in the near future.

Finally a voice of reason in the mainstream media. BQ will be a career backup.

Amen. If the Browns take a QB in this draft, it should either be Jamarcus Russell (because he could be the real deal) or Troy Smith (if nothing but to appease the fan base). I'm not sold on Frye, and Derek Anderson's a washup. If they were to actually land Green, then we'd be in decent shape to groom someone (and we'd have a QB that didn't lock in on their receivers).

Browns fans want AP with this pick. Yes, the injury bug is there. But with Lewis signing the one-year contract, AP is a real possibility to share time with him before taking over the full year next year. First round AP, get a lineman in the second, and then see if Troy drops in their laps in the third/fourth. That would be a good draft, and there would be a celebration in Cleveland like the second coming of LeBron.

it is a viable concern, that being AP's injury history. the hesitation of picking someone with injury history at #3, who plays the position that probably has as much contact as any, and who has a physical running style, in the afc north, is enough to give you pause.

however, i would counter with something that is partially in jest, but also serious. guys that have never been injured before have come to cleveland and been taken down, like lcb winslow, braylon. as such, i would posit that once you strap on the orange helmet, injury history becomes irrelavent.

Just looked him up, Grandpa must be on crack

The stanford qb is Trent Edwards, who's built for the league at 6'4 220

But he threw 6 td's 6 picks and won just one game this past season.. he may blossom into a good QB but I don't get why everyone thinks Troy is going to be bad based soley on height and one game.

there is a rumor floating about on the OBR that Cleveland and Atlanta are already talking trade should Calvin Johnson still be on the board at #3. Cleveland thinks that at least one of the 3 guys they have targeted, should the above scenario play out, will be on the board at #8.

I completely agree. Troy Smith to me would be a steal in round 3, he was fair and away the most polished QB in the College Regular Season last yr. To say that he will be a failure because of height is a joke. Drew Brees is 6'1 and he's a Pro Bolwer and probably someone who the browns would trade for in a second if he was available. It's all about finding the right situation for the right person and there is no way to tell if Smith will be a bust or boom, but career stats and record deserve a look in round 2 or 3.
