Official Cleveland Browns Draft Thread

I have just never been overly impressed with Stanton, although I am unable to watch the Combine because Warner Cable sucks balls. I just think that Troy offers so much. Between skill and leadership and the fact that he is a home grown kid, he could save this team.
I was never overly impressed with Stanton until today (I know, only one day)

After listening and watching today, I just feel like Stanton may turn out to be a better pro. Hell, who knows.

Yes I would.

Why? As much as I like Troy, he would be just another QB behind that offensive line. As much as I like Troy, he isn't going to do anything to improve this team's defense.

He's a nice player to have, but he might not be *THE* player to get with that pick.

And that applies to Stanton too (don't jump into the middle of a conversation Mike ya knucklehead)***

I just think that Troy is the only QB in this draft that could survive on this team in it's current state, between his athleticism and his game intelligence. Russell might be the only other QB I would consider. You are right though, this team has a lot of other pressing needs. If we grab one of the two premier OL on the market right now, along with a big game DB like Clements or LB like Thomas this team is on the right track to becoming competitive again. Part of it is my Buckeye googles, but it's also that I truly believe Troy is a special player.

Hell, who knows.

That says it all right there. So much of this is a crapshoot. Like I was saying, I just think Troy is special. That being said, I think they will take the players they feel will help the team the soonest. Savage is a good talent evaluator and he picked a good one last year with Wimbley and I think D'Qwell will be a servicable starter on this defense as well.

In Quinn's eyes, he's No. 1

Notre Dame QB makes his pitch as Browns' pick, or better
Sunday, February 25, 2007Mary Kay Cabot
Plain Dealer Reporter
Indianapolis -- Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who grew up as a Browns fan in Dublin, Ohio, has said he'd love to play in Cleveland -- and the Browns made it clear they like him, too.
It's a lot more likely to happen now that the Browns won the coin toss with the Buccaneers to land the No. 3 overall pick in the draft. Tampa Bay will pick fourth.
"The chances of him being there are better now," said one Browns insider. "What's not to like about Brady Quinn?"

Browns? defense needs help up front

INDIANAPOLIS Maybe Lake Erie will turn into a fountain of youth.

Ancient Ted Washington can do a cannonball, displacing scores of walleye and leaving him dripping with vigor.

If not, the Browns had better take a draft plunge for a nose tackle.

With no adequate replacement for Washington evident in free agency, the focus turns to NFL Combine visitors Alan Branch (Michigan), Tank Tyler (North Carolina State), Justin Harrell (Tennessee) and after that, only Phil Savage knows who. Utah?s Paul Soliai, maybe? Or Ohio State?s Quinn Pitcock?

Ends may not justify the means for Browns

INDIANAPOLIS -- Debating from now until the morning of the draft April 28 probably would not resolve where the Browns need help more -- the offensive line or the defensive line.

As it turns out, this crop is deep in guards and centers and defensive ends. Most of the ends fit a 4-3 defensive line better than the 3-4 the Browns play, but there are some potential replacements for free agent-to-be Alvin McKinley and aging Orpheus Roye, the starting defensive ends for the Browns the last two seasons.

"The chances of him being there are better now," said one Browns insider. "What's not to like about Brady Quinn?"

Because of that - and the fact the Browns don't plan to pick this high again in the near future - the Browns are all over Quinn. The team was scheduled to interview him Saturday night.

Weis predicted last season that within three years, Quinn would be the No. 3 quarterback in the NFL behind Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, whom Weis helped developed into a three-time Super Bowl winner.
"I can't imagine any player in the country being more valuable than Quinn," Weis said during Sugar Bowl week. "He has that special something only few quarterbacks have."

I say Petersen. He comes pre-injured so we won't be as surprised when his career ends on the first day of training camp.

That has been my thinking all along. Why should we take a guy who has a history ,even if it is just one incident, of having a freak injury. The Browns are known for freak injuries and Petersen's freak injury at Oklahoma scares me enough not to draft him.

why does it matter? cleveland has had so many guys that have never even had a sniffle in their entire careers be lost to freak injuries. what's the difference?

I understand what your saying that it can happen to anyone. I guess the way I look at it is that sometimes you get a guy and you have bad luck. Example of this would be Bentley who was barely ever injured during his NFL career until he came to Cleveland. Then there are players like Peterson, who already has a history of a freak injury. The Browns aren't going to care what I think but if a guy already has a history of a freak injury I wouldn't want to invest that much money in a guy who already is prone to having such bad luck. Just my opinion though. Go Bucks! Go Browns!

QB possibilities are bubbling in Berea
Wednesday, February 28, 2007
By Steve Doerschuk

The concept of Troy Smith as a Round 1 draft pick is going, going, gone.

That flattens his financial prospects but inflates his chance of landing on the east bank of the Cuyahoga River.

"We're looking forward to having him over at our facility," Browns General Manager Phil Savage said at the NFL Combine. "We wanted to run him through the gamut at Berea."

It takes 10 minutes to drive from the 6-foot quarterback's high school alma mater to Cleveland Browns Stadium.
