The only time I see Jimmy at center is when we are up on an oppenent late in the game. I know having Sims right next to Steve last year made a difference. Having Mangold next to Jimmy for a series or two in a live game is better than any practice.

Every year there's quite a bit of optimism about the OL, but I think this year it's finally warranted.

Every year I have started a thread about how good I feel about the OL - and every year I have been disappointed. Not this year. In fact, it already turned around last year about mid-season.

That is what is so great about thiis OL.

1. There is legitimate competition at every position. That is as important on the OL as at any other spot IMO. It is very easy for an OL to get fat and slow if he isn't being pushed.

2. We no longer have to worry that a key injury will leave an unfillable hole in the line.

3. JT can rotate players and have a fresher squad in the 4th quarter - something they do effectively with the DL and he has stated as an objective for the OL.

I don't think this is just message board speculatin. I am fairly certain I read this as a quote or at least paraphrase from the coaching staff - that Cordle could see some time at C and Mangold could play some G. This may be as part of the aforementioned rotation scheme, but I think it has legs.

44820 and Oh are right, at least IMO. The coaching staff has had nothing but praise for Cordle, and it would be foolish not to get him some game experience this year. I'm quite certain you will see situations in which Mangold slides over and Cordle snaps the ball.

One thing is certainly for sure here: Jim Bollman is under an intense spotlight. If this line can't move people, if we don't develope a back who can consistently run up 150 yards a game, he's going to be the center of a "fire 'em" storm.

I don't want to see another year of "no go" in the red zone like last year and the year before.

The best Buckeye football begins with a "we're going to run, you try and stop us" mentality. When we get that back Ginn, Holmes and Gonzo are going to get the coverage they need to shred teams and break open close games.

The Real Issue at Hand...

I am sorry, but it has nothing to do with the Line Coach.

It has everything to do with an Offensive Coordinator that can come into Columbus and make things happen...

A "Thad Matta"-type coach that can come in and get it done!

This is great news. I know that Coach Tressel likes to keep all of his linemen fresh, whether it is on Offense or defense. I can't remember where I heard this from, but I seem to remember hearing that in order to keep chemistry with the O-line and still rotate them. Coach was talking about subbing in whole units during games. According to him, that will enable fresh linemen and two whole units that work with each other all the time. I would love to see something like that come to pass.

Can you imagine how a D-Line would feel. They've been playing for a whole drive but have been unable to stop the offense. Now they're in the red zone, they're tired but are ready to turn it up a notch to stop us from scoring, then an entirely new offensive line comes into the game lol :biggrin:. Haha, I don't think there are too many teams in the country who would have the depth at D-line to handle something like that if we manage to put it in place.

Texas does...they have the deepest DL in the country. So, obviously the Texas will be the first litmus test of our OL. If our kids perform well in that game, against that DL, then we'll have reason to be very confident the rest of the year.

That's an ouch that could easily translate into a RS season for Cordle. Not that he couldn't come back, but there is just no need to push him when there are so many kids ready to play (counting Winner and Conroy there are 14 other OL who are capable of contributing. Besides, with three OL RSing last season, and Boone likely to play, it creates a pretty big bubble in four years - the kind of problem with had after 2003.


As for platooning an entire OL, that would be great but very difficult to achieve - especially given the frequency of OL dings. I would be more inclined to look for swapping out one side or the other (the G & T who really need to be in sync) rather than try to bring in an entire new line.

Bollman is under some pressure this season........just like every other coach. If you remember, Peterson stepped in and took on a much larger role later in the season with the OL.......which left Bollman time to concentrate on the whole scheme of things offensively. Coincidentally the offensive line and offense both had large improvements when those changes occurred. :wink2:

If Kirk Barton Returns then.....

If Kirk Barton Returns then how do you think are Offensive Line will look rolling into Minnesota? Let's be honest Alex Boone is going to be hard to remove from the playing field and Kirk, in my opinion, was playing the best on the line prior to his injury.

I'm not sure if Barton or Boone can play guard or Doug Datish sees the pine and Barton and Boone take the Right and Left Tackle spots respectfully.

Doug Datish seems to be a little off balance at times or a step too slow. I think he unfortunately is the weakest link currently. Guess, we'll see what the coaches think this upcoming weekend.

I'm really looking forward to a 200 yards plus ground game day against the Gophers.

I thought Boone played well Saturday. In fact except for the 2 Clipping? penalties I think there was only 1 holding penalty on the O-Line! We need a break out day for the running back and perhaps a touchdown or two for Pittman
