OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (National Champion)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

I am most definitely good with Hartline taking over the OC position, I think he is at the stage of his career where he is ready to make that jump if he wants it (and I think you are right, he probably does). Plus you think he had to learn a ton from Chip even though it was for one year.

On the bolded text from your post, this x1000%. If we don't have someone that is tantamount to Kelly/Frye for the run game, I would have serious concerns for our run game. I think that will be the case though, Day seems to know that is not his forte and hence why he completely delegated that to Kelly/Frye.
I hear the call, but that natty doesn’t happen if someone didn’t know how to put that o-line back together at least three times this year. And look who they bullied in the playoffs. That wasn’t Rice, two service academies, and ding-dong school.

I don't think I could compare Beck/Warriner to Hartline. B/W were pretty much nepotism hires, and were old and stubborn. Like @RugbyBuck said, I don't see Hartline being as stubborn as running 30 dives in a game when they see it isn't working. He's a former NFL player, he knows the ebs and flows of the game. How do you know if you have a young offensive mind if you just relegate him to recruiting and position coaching? Idk, this is all hypothetical, I'm fine with either scenario at this point: bring in the more experienced OC or just move forward with Hartline and let him learn on the fly.
I'm not the biggest fan of the Kevin Wilson retread, I think defending national champions shouldn't have to go to former hires if they don't need to. OSU should pursue the biggest names if they can, and if they still think Hartline is the best, then so be it. Wilson seems like a lazy hire to me. And OSU should swing for the fences on an OL coach as well
I’d be OK with Wilson as a co-OC, 2nd man in the room (behind Hartline), run game coordinator. I don’t want him as the play caller or OL coach.

Agreed completely, after that amazing feat it made losing Frye and Kelly hard. Going to be really tough to replicate.

So in other words, I think we're saying the same thing. But Hartline will need to take a page out of Day's strategy in delegating the area of the offense you don't know very well. Just gotta get the right guy to man the run game. Hartline and Day are the air controllers, just need ground control...I'll wait for the obvious reference.

Uh, what? Forget to hit the sarcasm font button?

Unfortunately, I’m being realistic. New OC, OL Coach, and qb coach. Lost starting QB, 2 starting RBs, 2 starting Tackles, Rimington Award C, starting TE, OSU receptions leading WR. And that’s just the offense.

I think we will make the playoffs based on the roster talent, but it’s hard not to go into the next season with trepidation as opposed to realistic aspirations of an NC like this season.

These are some of my favorite seasons to watch …

This season was the first one, at least from 1968 on, that the Buckeye have actually closed the deal on a natty when they were actually expected to be a juggernaut. Usually, to the extent such things are "usual", they win one a year before they're supposed to when their "dogs bite as pups". It's always much more likely than not that they won't win the ultimate prize, but I'm just going to afterglow on the natty, which I think was extremely cathartic given all the recent "almosts" and the feeling that the program was starting to slide, and not sweat anything about Buckeye football for a while. Realism just isn't nearly as appealing as afterglowing right now even though it will be virtually impossible for them not to take a step back from the summit next season.
