This season was the first one, at least from 1968 on, that the Buckeye have actually closed the deal on a natty when they were actually expected to be a juggernaut. Usually, to the extent such things are "usual", they win one a year before they're supposed to when their "dogs bite as pups". It's always much more likely than not that they won't win the ultimate prize, but I'm just going to afterglow on the natty, which I think was extremely cathartic given all the recent "almosts" and the feeling that the program was starting to slide, and not sweat anything about Buckeye football for a while. Realism just isn't nearly as appealing as afterglowing right now even though it will be virtually impossible for them not to take a step back from the summit next season.

And that’s fair. Being in the military and now a civilian living in Maine, I haven’t lived in Columbus in nearly 2 decades. So the afterglow washes out quickly when you are separated from the atmosphere of C-Bus.

That said, I love promoting Hartline to OC. He’s had incredible mentorship along the way (and continues to do so). At some point he was going to be an OC, and I’m glad it won’t be us looking back wishing we had kept him on staff. I can’t wait to see the go routes and passing plays from him. It’s going to be cool watching him grow as a coach.

Was hoping for Moorehead, but Bowen having experience also helps Hartline.
Moorehead may not jive with Day as he is heavy RPO.

He deserves a chance and obviously happy he's going to stick around. That said going from Chip Kelly to Hartline as OC is a significant downgrade. Don't really love his first game is against Texas
Texas has no tape or tendencies + we have nothing to lose.

I don't see Hartline as a significant downgrade from Kelly. Of course, Kelly is far more experienced, but he also called Nebraska and tcun last season and, for all the talk in retrospect about preserving the team for the playoffs, it didn't look all that great at the time throughout the season. Yes, we won it all and Chip called a great playoff run, but it would've been nice to see that all along. I think we're going to see a better offense this year, not solely because of Hartline, but certainly with his contribution.

My concern is bandwidth... can't imagine how much time it takes to coach a position, coach/coordinate an offense, create and teach new plays, game plan for each opponent and recruit... and have a family
There is no longer a coaching number limit. Some of that can be done by assistants and analysts

Eh up until the OL injuries the offense was humming under Kelly. After that the OL injuries or player mistakes had more to do with offensive execution than play calling save for the Nebraska and SCUM games. Hartline has some big ass shoes to fill.

No one is saying he doesn't, but there's a lot of "he can't handle it, he's not up to the job, doesn't have the bandwidth, not experienced enough, etc" out there and it's not just the fringe. Yes, there's limited sample size for Hartline as full OC (actually none since Day couldn't/wouldn't give him the keys), but the fact is that the guy has overachieved (at least relative to the expectations put on him) and been successful everywhere he's been, at every stop and level.
I remember the same sentiments being expressed at the idea that someone with no coaching experience could come in and even be a successful GA, much less one of the all time elite positions coaches. NO one thought he'd hang 1,000 yard seasons in the league and I'm sure that only a few thought he'd see significant PT at tOSU. Some guys are just winners, period. He's one of them and I think what he's done with Z6 will extend to the whole offense. I'll be surprised if this year's offense, assuming that Day can/will let it run, will be better than last year's with Kelly.

if nothing else, brian has earned his shot. and winning a natty gives ryan day the goodwill and cred to take some chances and grow his legacy.

Hartline is very talented. He's an extremely hard worker and a good teacher. He's certainly quite intelligent also. All of this tells me he'll learn what he doesnt know and he'll put the effort into being great at it. There might be some stumbles, everyone does, but how he approaches his tough times is what will make or break his OC tenure. His Buckeye tenure is unquestioned.
