O-Zone (Official Thread)

I think that's a possibility Hoat. I don't think it was an aberration, but I think it may have been a game where his weaknesses were much worse than usual.

if thats the case its twice this season. could be a coincidence. could mean people are figuring out how to beat tressel.

aj's statement is exactly how he and the rest of the defense should feel and play. however, and this is the key, it doesn't just work one way. absoltuely the d should be there to bail out the offense when they are having a bad game. but the offense should bail out the defense when they have a bad game. thats how a "team" works. someone needs to explain to tressel that a football team is comprised of more than just a defensive and special teams unit. the offense is actually involved in the discussion as well.

1st Down--26 plays (41%) for 104 yards
7 pass (27%)--5/7 for 50 yards
19 runs (73%) for 54 yards--2.8 ypc
ave. gain of 4.0 yards

I just read a thread on bn that I thought was a very good analysis of the whole offense, I was going to do something like that, but I didnt tape the game, b/c I was at a friends house and we don't have the torrent file.

The thing that stuck out to me was the fact that we did try to throw the ball more on first down. Smith was sacked 3 times on first down and I believe was it said was flushed out of the pocket 1 or 2 times. That would mean we attempted to throw 12 times on first down and that would make 14 runs. That would be pretty damn even and unpredictable.

It also made mention of how many times Smith was flushed from the pocket. I think the problem in this game was when Barton when down with his injury the o-line was just totally out of whack and it threw the whole offense off. Timing and everything.

1) The talent at Ohio State isn't as good as advertised.
2) Jim Tressel is not very good at putting together a consistantly effective offense.
3) Penn State is significantly better than anyone thought they were.
4) A combination of the first three.
The most logical of those answers is number four.

Most logical answer is number 4? Negative.

I mean sure PSU probably much better than anybody thought. However I am getting a bit tired of everybody just passing off the offensive problems. Hell ESPN loves to point it out. I know how everybody feels about that, but they are absolutely right.

5 years of shitty offense doesnt lie.

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but I read this kinda crap, and it pisses me off.

The Ozone/John Porentas editorial re: Offense

The First Big Mistake of the Jim Tressel Era
By John Porentas In just his second season at Ohio State Jim Tressel brought euphoria to the OSU football program.
In his fifth season, Jim Tressel has made his first big mistake as the OSU Head Football Coach.
It may come as somewhat of a surprise to you that Tressel's big gaff had nothing to do with OSU's second loss of the season, nor, for that matter, the first. Tressel's big faux pas occurred last summer when he tantalized his fan base with talk of an explosive offense and the ability to contend for a national championship.
Five games into the season, the offense has been anything but explosive and any national championship hopes the Buckeyes may have harbored evaporated last weekend in Happy Valley. Losing games is bad, but stoking up hopes, then not delivering, is not a wise thing to do with a fan base that basically wants to know what you have done for them lately.
A season of promise turned into a season of disappointment is more about credibility than it is about wins and losses. Fair or not, Tressel is now seen as a coach that has either botched a talented offensive team that he himself described as explosive or as a coach who didn't evaluate his talent accurately and arrived at a bad conclusion. Either way, it's not a good situation of OSU's fifth-year head coach. Either way, people are upset. Either way, it's about credibility.
It's a tough spot for Tressel, and there is no easy fix short of getting back the words he let loose before the season began. Unfortunately, words are a whole lot like bullets. Once you let them loose, it's real tough to get them back, especially when you let those words loose in a room full of reporters. They reported the words, and the Buckeye nation got all fired up by what they interpreted as Tressel's promise of fireworks on offense in 2005.
Jim Tressel told his fans his team would be exciting, and they believed him. Now they are doubting him. If Tressel wants to regain his credibility he must do one of two things. He either has to deliver on his promise in the remainder of the season, or come clean on why he was so far off in his evaluation of his team.
Achieving success the remainder of the season is clearly the more desirable fix for him, but if that doesn't happen, Tressel will have little choice. He either tells everybody why he was wrong, or he puts up with an ugly situation than can only get worse if he doesn't come up with answers. Buckeye fans don't like losses, but they happen most every season, and life goes on in the Buckeye football universe. Unfulfilled promises, however, are quite a different story. They're a story that requires an ending that includes a candid and clear response to the questions that are swirling about regarding the OSU offense. To avoid that discomfort, Tressel must win now, and win with an offense that fulfills the description he promised. The alternative is to start Googling recipes for crow.

Can't find a thing to disagree with here.

Man some people are extremely hard on coach T.

What do you want him to say we will lose 2 games. No.

This team could of played for the national title game, but they lost two hard fought games. Some people expectations are a little too high. I wonder what some of these people did in the Bruce and Cooper era when we had all the good teams and we never won a NC.

Reiterated my thoughts on his saying,"We should be explosive!" I and many bought into that believing if the head coach sees something in his team, it must be the truth! Now, he and the team have to live with expectations!

The big question is, what went wrong?

The author makes an important distinction between losing games and not delivering on promises.

Like it or not the expectation level is undefeated seasons and NC runs around here.

As far as what they did under Coop and Earl when we never won one, all I can do is ask you what those two gentelmen do for a living now and how their careers at OSU came to an end?

The answer to those questions will give you some insight into what awaits JT if he refuses to make changes and have a decent offense for the first time in his OSU coaching career.

The offense has been mediocre at best under JT and its costing us games when it has no need to do so, the talent is in place. Now this off season JT either addresses the issue and improves it by making a change OR he makes no changes and gives us more JT speak about how we will get better without really changing anything.

If he does the latter then imo, he is putting his own ego and loyalty in front of the needs of the OSU program and as much as I love him as our coach he should be gone. No one is above the program.

I don't think some of the people complaining were around for the Bruce & Cooper eras. Their expectations stem from 2002, and not before. :(

To those fans who are versed in the history of the team even though they only recently (within the last 5 years) became dedicated fans, a national championship seems even rarer. We can hope for, but not always expect, that goal.

Great, the one time we get JT to answer a question and show true emotion...it bites him in the ass.
