O.J. Mayo (Official Thread)

USC = Unethical Sickle Cell ?

It would seem likely that an NCAA look at these allegations regarding Mayo gets rolled into the current Bush/Jarrett investigation.

ESPN - USC, Tim Floyd have no excuse for turning a blind eye - Columnist

Does anyone connect from what Pat Forde accuses, that USC ought to have realized that Mayo had some eligibility issues?

Death Penalty is some strong hyperbole or was that just a metaphor?
This sure makes TM look not so slovenly for taking a pass last year.

Not recruiting or pursuing one and dones of O.J. caliber is one thing, steering clear of questionable background or compromised eligibility is another.

So we should hear something about it round about 2011 at this pace?

Forde says USC deserves the death penalty but ultimately won't get it because of the "smoking crater" it left at SMU. What people forget is that SMU was never a particularly noteworthy program until they started cheating with both hands....they became a national power upon doing so, and then the death penalty smacked them back down where they belonged. At some point the NCAA will have to use the death penalty again - they can't keep worrying about the impact on a program. At what point do you stop saying we don't want to punish too heavily a program that wipes their ass with the rulebook?

I'd be surprised if the NCAA ever uses the death penalty again. There is way more money on the table now than there was the last time they used it.

I can see them may be giving it to a smaller school but a school of the size of USC with all its "tradition" and money I highly doubt it. USC might have to join the SEC if they want to continue to cheat in both football and basketball.

This is the exact reason I didn't want this kid at Ohio State. I remember hearing about O.J. when he was in 8th grade, you knew something was bound to come up about some sort of improper benefits. Having him on your team for one year would simply not be worth it. I don't blame O.J. either, I blame everybody around him who put him up on a pedistal since he was in junior high.

You don't need to give a program the full death penalty. Dropping both major sports scholarships by 50% for a 5 year period would be sufficiently punitive without shutting the program down. Try running a D1A football team with with around 42 schollies, or a hoops program with 6-7. A good 5-8 years of sitting at or near the bottom of your conference standings will send the message just fine.

The loss in ticket sales, alumni donations and merchandise sales will hit them where it hurts -- the big ol' wallet.

Oh my god, OJ Mayo receiving benefits?
It's one thing when self-centered hyped up stars do this, but when your regular old modest, team-first, role playing athletes start doing it.. Wow! Never saw this one coming!

do i need sarcasm font for that?
