Notre Dame (football only discussion)

what needs to happen is quite having the BCS give special circumstances for ND they should have to have the same criteria as everyone else.
in effect you could argue that has already happened.
They get a drastically reduced payout per annum, instead of zero, should they not qualify for the BCS - which is what happens to members of the Pac 10 not called USC (or Big 10 not called tOSU for instance).
They get a reduced take versus the regular appearance fee versus other BCS qualifiers from conferences, which reflects the pay-out that they would otherwise make to conference members.
They get an auto-berth for being top 8 in the BCS rankings. That is realistic given 5 BCS games including championship.
They are qualified to be at-large if better than 14th ranked, exactly as the other conference members are from the BCS conferences.

I would still prefer that they be a conference member, and the Big East would be a good fit for them. 8 games per year, plus room for 4 OOC, consisting of say, USC, Michigan and two service academies or Directionals. (Unless they wanted to break with tradition a la Penn State joining the Big Ten and drop one or both of those).

Hell they should probably just move Air Force out of the Mountain West and start a new conference with Army, Navy, Air Force, and Notre Dame. Then they could play 3x per season for the "Commander of NBC" trophy and have a guaranteed BCS bid for the winner...right?
We're talking about changing things, not keeping them completely the same.

My question to everyone is why should ND have to join a conference? if they want to be independant that is their thing......what needs to happen is quite having the BCS give special circumstances for ND they should have to have the same criteria as everyone else.
you would need them to be in a conference so the same rules apply to everybody.

It would also make them realize that playing in a conference is harder because even the mediocre teams know you inside and out, so it's a battle every week.

Irish fans realize that they don't deserve a BCS bowl. Most of the rational fans understand that the operative word is deserve.

Like them or hate them (I hate them like poison) the Irish have a huge following and will bring people to the game and to the TV. I'll watch them because I want to see them get beaten like a rented mule (again). Others will watch because they love them and they are passionate about them.

Personally, I'm rooting for Charlie to right the ship in South Bend. It's fun beating the Irish when they suck. It's more fun beating them when they are a good team.

I've never understood the TV contract argument. Let ND keep their NBC TV contract for their home games while they're in a conference. I'm sure WVU, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Louisville, and South Florida won't raise a stink about having nationally televised games every other year.

The Big East makes sense. ND already competes there for basketball, and they already steal their bowl slots for football. Put Army back in C-USA, add Navy too, and drop Temple to D1-AA.

Temple is actually an independant this year....The Big East booted them out ofr football when the new conference formed. As is Army.

...

Ummmm... Dryden probably won't bother correcting you because he frequently doesn't care when he's misunderstood; but he was making a good point.

Dryden obviously knows that Temple is no longer in the Big East. There are 4 Division I-A independents, and Dryden suggested a fate for each of them. Clearly it was the independents that Dryden was talking about, not the Big East.

FWIW: While Dryden's suggestions are good as far as they go, I don't like the idea of the NCAA forcing anything on anyone, conference wise. Living here in ACC country, the local "wisdom" is that the Big 10 and Pac 10 should be forced to expand and have a conference championship game. If leaving ND alone prevents a precedent that would open that door, that's fine with me.

but it's the most fun to kick the shit out of them when they believe that they are really good and can compete with you, like in last year's Fiesta Bowl. The arrogance of ND fans I know going into last year's bowl game on why OSU wouldn't win was only slightly less pathetic than the defensive game plan that the exhalted one took a month to come with for OSU.

So just because the ACC, SEC, and Big 12 screwed up their conferences and potential NC hopes each year, the Pac10 and Big 10 have to follow suit?

it seems that some NoD players have been going to the Mike Hart School of Irrational Interview Comments:
"we aren't a team that gets blown out twice...," Notre Dame senior defensive end Chris Frome said.
umm... you ARE a team that gets blown out twice. although depending on who you get matched up with in the bowl game, you might be a team that gets blown out THREE times, which i guess would technically make your statement correct.

That's pretty much what counts for wisdom here in ACC country. They can't wrap their minds around undoing a mistake. Kinda like government...

What's even funnier is that you find this surprising!

ND the most loved/ HATED college football team in
America.

What's funny is delusional Notre Dame fans who can't possibly surmise why getting blown out by the only 2 good teams you play means people might actually think you don't belong on the same field with, I don't know, maybe one of those teams that already blew you out for a second time? Yep, must be HATE!

I hate the domers.

I can't wait to see them FINALLY beat a good team...then the fans will go ape thinking they belong in the NC talk/hype and then the next time they face another above .500 opponent, they'll get laid waste to yet again. I'd literally pay $100+ right now to see that the Fighting French get blasted by at least 24 in their bowl game.

ND sucks. Their D sucks the worst. Their coach sucks. Their fans generally suck. Touchdown Jesus doesn't care about football in the end.
