DISCLAIMER: This is not directed at the 2 regular ND fans on this board, or intent on describing them in any way;

There's been a lot of talk about the transitive property of football on the board recently...well no one does the transitive property quite like the typical Notre Dame subway alum. It goes something like:

I am catholic (or at least pretend to be), and Notre Dame is a college with high academic standards that is also catholic, therefore I am part of the team, part of the school, part of the tradition, and that gives me the unequivocal right to blast everyone from every school "we" beat, and even though I can't name 5 players on the team now, let alone anyone that played 5 years ago, I can then also talk all the shit I want to about teams we don't play, or beat 60 years ago, who don't have the tradition I know nothing about...unless of course we lose, in which case I will then trash all you State schoolers for your embarassing academic standards even though I barely graduated from high school myself, and then when the team reaches 4 losses, gets ape-fucked by USC, and takes the annual McNeiling in the 2nd tier bowl game (assuming "we" make one), I'll crawl back into the festering shithole I emerged from until Notre Dame is 4-1 again, in which case I'll reappear and say the same shit over and over again.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

Tooo funny!! Seriously, around SB people are happy that ND is better but are not really believers.

Domers are much improved. They still have a way to go. But, with their current schedule, 11-2 is very possible. And, honestly, what's wrong with them going to a BCS game, especially if they go to the Rose Bowl and play us (Assuming USC gets to Miami)? NoD being good again is good for college football. And, honestly, I think that Willingham's performance at Washington vindicates their firing of Ty (Although not necessarily their hiring of Charlie Weis). Their only loss thus far is against a really good football team (IMO, Michigan State is for real).

Let's just sit and let them enjoy their glory. Last year was the year that we got to make fun of their incredible misfortunes. This year, we have Michigan to make fun of (And, honestly, that's more fun).

And, as NDC said, their fanbase isn't going crazy yet.

Glory?
  • They have played only one team with a winning record and lost badly. They have played teams with a combined record of 13-14.
  • Their SOS is ranked #53. For comparison, our maligned weak schedule is ranked #33.
  • They are still barely in the top 50 in the computer power ratings, admittedly not the only source of information but a pretty good one.
Where's the "glory" in that?

Notre Dame's schedule with each opponent's current record and AP ranking:

(W) San Diego State (1-4)
(W) Michigan (2-3)
(L) Michigan State (5-1) #23
(W) Purdue (2-3)
(W) Stanford (3-3)
North Carolina (4-1) #22
Washington (0-5)
Pittsburgh (4-1) #24
Boston College (4-1)
Navy (4-2)
Syracuse (1-4)
USC (3-1) #8

Their four wins have come at home, with their loss being on the road. They've played one currently-ranked team and lost. Four of their 12 opponents are currently ranked.

Side note: Seeing as Note Dame beat Purdue 38-21, we had better beat Purdue worse tomorrow.

More casual fans who state they are NoD fans will tune in. And, NoD always brings in big ratings for big games, because fans of other teams like to see them fall from grace. The BCS ratings have been down as of late. NoD will bring them up. What grace is there to be lost if they are just incredibly terrible?

Maybe so we can laugh at them when they inevitably falter badly?

That's a huge part of it. Who doesn't like rooting against Notre Dame? I know that I enjoy it. I'd rather have NoD in the 8-4 to 10-2 range throughout the year, so then they can face a great SEC, Big 12, or Big Ten team in a bowl. It's just fun to see big name programs face off against big name programs, and NoD is a big name program due to their tradition. And, frankly, they aren't that great. So, if they go to a big bowl game and get crushed, we get to go and say "I told you so!"

It's what I miss about the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

4-1 instead of 0-5.

Purdue's defense sucks, ND put on an offensive display for a while in that game. 3 TD's in the 3rd quarter all right in front of me.
