Northwestern, after 1-11 season, fires defensive coordinator, assistants

Northwestern has fired defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil and two other assistants following a 1-11 season that marked its worst since 1989, the school announced Tuesday.

Longtime defensive line coach Marty Long and wide receivers coach Dennis Springer are also out.

"Our entire football family is grateful for what these three men brought to our program on and off the field," coach Pat Fitzgerald said in a statement. "They recruited and developed student-athletes who will be prepared for life and make our university community proud for years to come.

"Ultimately, these difficult decisions were made with the intention of putting our team in the best position for success on gameday moving forward."

Just sayin': I'm just guessing that with a contract through 2030 Fitzgerald would be very expensive to fire.

Pat Fitzgerald suspended 2 weeks in Northwestern hazing inquiry

Northwestern is implementing several measures to curb hazing within its football program, including a two-week suspension of coach Pat Fitzgerald after an investigation found evidence to support a claim of problematic conduct.

Fitzgerald, the Wildcats' coach since 2006, will begin the unpaid suspension Friday. Northwestern is not set to start preseason practices until early August.

Other measures include no more off-campus practices in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where the team held preseason training for years, and the monitoring of the football locker room by someone who doesn't report to Fitzgerald or his staff.

Fitzgerald said in a statement that he was "very disappointed" to learn of the hazing allegations. "Northwestern football prides itself on producing not just athletes, but fine young men with character befitting the program and our University," he said. "We hold our student-athletes and our program to the highest standards; we will continue to work to exceed those standards moving forward."

I'm almost 50 so I remember when hazing, as long as it was within some boundaries, was expected and not a big deal. But I honestly thought it didn't exist anymore with how sensitive everyone is today.
I honestly don't ever think hazing will go away. Its too much of a right of passage in almost all walks of life. The new guys always need to go through some type of indoctrination into a program to become "one of the guys" or "part of the team/family".

NWU hazing? What? They have to reproduce the unit circle, all four quadrants, in (cos, sin), radian and degrees?

Northwestern really thought a 2 week vacation was going to sweep this under the rug.

Fitz ain’t gonna make it through this.
Yeah, the plot thickens. Starting to look like the school was just hoping this would blow over. Doesn't sound good.

Which is a very funny strategy to take. As if their very famous and bragged about journalism school would just sit back and take that answer.

The investigation even mentioned this was widespread.

That was my first though too. A school that is best known for its Journalism School, that has done major investigations over the years and has a school newspaper that is more respected than many national publications was hoping this would just go away.
My guess is at the least Fitz is done.

Yeah - Fitz is going to get fired and I’m serious when I say this…..NU may get booted from the conference over this. They are supposed to be squeaky clean.

On a related note, my Ten Vol family chirped “what is in the drinking water in BigTen schools to make everyone want to hump guys ?”

I gotta admit, this is a really good question
