Former cheerleader sues Northwestern over alleged sexual harassment

Members of Northwestern University’s cheerleading team were forced to associate with drunk and belligerent fans without security, according to a lawsuit filed by a female former cheerleader against the university on Friday.

The 58-page complaint filed by Hayden Richardson in federal court and obtained by the Chicago Tribune alleged that members of the team were “presented as sex objects to titillate the men that funded the majority of Northwestern’s athletics programs.”

The suit says the team’s head coach, Pam Bonnevier, required them to “mingle” with the wealthy donors, who, Richardson said, touched her breasts and buttocks over her uniform and made “sexually charged comments.”

Richardson, who cheered for the school from 2018 to 2020, also said in the suit that Northwestern “forced its cheerleaders to behave in a degrading and demeaning manner intended to entice and captivate wealthy donors.”

Additionally, Richardson says men offered her alcoholic beverages even though she was underage in 2018-19, the timeframe detailed in the suit.

"Today, I informed President Schapiro of my decision to step down as Northwestern's Director of Athletics and leave Northwestern University," Polisky said in a statement. "Over the last 10 days, it has become clear to me that the current challenges will not allow me to effectively lead our department, especially during these unsettling times in college athletics. My love and respect for Northwestern and for our student-athletes, coaches and staff, is greater than my own desire to lead the department. I do not want to be a distraction to our incredible men and women as they pursue a collective goal – to help our student-athletes become the best they can be. While my family and I are disappointed, I move forward knowing this is the right decision.

"I am grateful to President Schapiro for the opportunity to serve and I wish Northwestern the very best in the future. I will always cheer on the Wildcats!"

On May 2, Northwestern promoted Polisky from his position as deputy athletic director for external affairs to be its next athletic director, but that move was met with some resistance. Polisky is one of four defendants, along with the school, in an ongoing lawsuit filed by a Northwestern cheerleader, claiming that cheerleaders were sexually harassed and the school did not properly handle complaints from those cheerleaders.

Following Polisky’s hiring, six female faculty members signed a letter opposing the decision by the university. The letter expressed concern with the hire and urged the search school to allow for more transparency in the hiring process.

“We are alarmed by this decision and, indeed, embarrassed on behalf of the university,” the letter signed by the six faculty members read in part, per the Chicago Tribune. “We believe that, at the very least, before Polisky is formally hired, the university must commission and make public an independent, transparent, third-party investigation that demonstrates that Polisky performed his legally mandated duties and acted with integrity when addressing the concerns of the cheerleaders and their allies.”

4. NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS

Games vs. potential Top 25 teams: 2

If Northwestern beats Iowa and Wisconsin next fall during the regular season, the Wildcats will likely head back to the Big Ten Championship Game against Ohio State. That doesn't sound that far-fetched, does it? That would be two wins over nationally-ranked competition — three if you consider Michigan a Top 25 team this season — for a program that was on the verge of winning a league title last December against the Buckeyes, a game that feels like it happened many months ago. The non-conference slate won't give Northwestern any issues.

three if you consider Michigan a Top 25 team this season

Just sayin': But we don't....:lol:

Is it me or is that trophy better looking than the CFP trophy?

Of course it is. It’s less than a 2 hour drive from the Waterford factory to Aviva Stadium

The "Coaches Poll" Trophy has a Waterford crystal football. It's definitely a better looking trophy the than current CFP one.

Northwestern releases early design concepts for dynamic new Ryan Field

Privately funded stadium campus will emphasize fan experience, accessibility, sustainability while creating a year-round community asset for Northwestern and Evanston communities

One year after announcing a transformative gift by the Pat ’59, ’09 H (’97, ’00 P) and Shirley Ryan ’61, ’19 H (’97, ’00 P) Family to build a new Ryan Field, Northwestern University today released renderings of a schematic design for the new stadium to replace the current 97-year-old structure.

The new Ryan Field stadium campus will be funded entirely with private dollars — requiring no taxpayer financing — and will create a world-class home for Northwestern University Athletics. When complete, the new stadium will create a best-in-the-nation football experience for fans, student-athletes and the community.

Proposed design highlights include:
  • A more intimate setting: Significantly smaller crowds — designed for a maximum capacity of 35,000, more than 12,000 fewer than the current Ryan Field, with a state-of-the-art canopy designed to focus noise and light on the field;
  • New community assets: The new Ryan Field is being developed as a modern stadium campus with beautiful plazas, an exceptional new community park as well as other publicly accessible greenspaces for residents to enjoy year-round community activities;
  • Accessibility: The new stadium will apply Universal Design standards and will set a new standard for accessibility and inclusivity, making it among the most accessible stadiums in the country; and
  • Sustainability: The project is designed to achieve Gold LEED certification.
The new stadium will be fan-centered, with the best sight lines in college football and a premium experience, including chair backs, for every fan as well as an innovative student section modeled on other sports; cutting-edge technology and scoreboards; upgraded concessions featuring food from local restaurants; and iconic design features inside and out.
