i doubt either are on scholarship now.
his entire time at LSU, he rarely ever had a kicker or punter on scholly.

Bingo. I'm sure that even Einstein made a couple boneheaded decisiions in his life. Saban's accomplishments at Alabama are above any sort of criticism...however, his stupid decisions yesterday aren't.

He had a number of other issues with Quantum Physics; which he viewed as a threat to his own theory. Einstein proved wrong on every one of them. And the fire - black hole issue is now implicating Relativity as being the incomplete theory.

He said in the postgame presser that that kicker has made them from 60 in practice. If he hadn't elevated it so much it wouldn't have landed in play, make or no.

Not just you. I certainly like the chances of a 57 yard goal over a hail mary. That being said, I was thinking he would at least be able to get it to the end line and render a return moot.

It wouldn't have even been a hail mary. At 40 yards out you can actually run routes. Sure they have to get to the endzone, and Auburn would have kept everything in front of them in one hell of a prevent look. I think going for 6, and playing OT was the safer of the options. Hell, the prior kick had been blocked and to kick it that far the trajectory was lower. The fact that the kid didn't have the leg... well... his coach has to know that. And, when he DIDN'T have the leg, and Auburn already knew it was a return more than a block attempt, Bama is playing down 2 players (Kicker and holder) with a host of offensive linemen who can't catch a speedster in any event. Auburn had 3 guys to block who might be able to make the tackle. They had 10 men to block those 3 guys.

Depends on the kicker. 57 is pretty long to begin with, maybe if you've got Aaron Pettrey...
But if you've already gone 0/3 and your guy has missed a 30yd FG ... why would you even attempt it?

Just sayin': He used a different kicker (i.e. the long range guy). Cade Foster missed the three shorter kicks. Adam Griffith missed the 57 yarder.

While I don't doubt your perspective about his time at LSU, both kickers reported as on scholarship (Foster from class of 2010 and Griffith class of 2012). Perhaps he needs to recruit better?

Yes, I'm sure it depends on many factors, but this being a different kicker, I can only assume he thought he had the range. If I had a kid I thought could make it, that's what I'd do. Obviously Saban wanted to win so he did what he thought would do that. He was wrong. I'd have been wrong too.
