Nick Saban warns 'thunderbolt' will hit college football as NIL starts to resemble pay for play
College football is in danger, according to the Alabama coach.
Nick Saban said Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) is a system without guardrails and "whoever's willing to invest the most has the best chance to have the best team" during his Thursday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. The Alabama coach warns NIL and conference realignment will continue to spiral until a "thunderbolt" hits the sport and sparks change.
"[NIL] is going to continue in the same direction that it's going until something happens," Saban said. "There's going to be some kind of a thunderbolt. This is not a system that has any guardrails. Right now, it's a game of whoever's willing to invest the most has the best chance to have the best team… Name, Image and Likeness has turned into something very similar to [pay for play]."
Saban went in-depth on the pitfalls of NIL and conference realignment during his appearance, sharing concern the latter will hurt tradition for college football and other sports. He also touched on how Alabama managed signing day amid Rose Bowl prep and how his team looks ahead of the matchup with Michigan.
