I seem to remember Nick Saban saying, first, that they were overlooking Ohio State. I mean, it's their third string quarterback. What chance do they have? We need to make sure we're ready for Oregon. Second, something like, "our players weren't worried about Ohio State - they're worried about not being hurt for their draft status." Both of those may not have actually been Nick Saban - they may have been their whiny fanbase. But they're funny excuses.

Their fans (and coaches) just bitch and moan at anything they perceive is a net negative to them. Hurry up offense? Saban claim it is a threat to player safety because their defense is getting torched. NIL? Bitch and moan because Bama can't keep up with some programs in that category on account of toothless rednecks that don't have money to dump into an NIL collective. Transfer portal? I won't repeat myself here.

Saban is in the same echelon of Bill Belichick for me. Do I respect the success he had for a prolonged period? Yes. Do I also despise him and root against him. Also yes. It looks like the end of a dynasty in Tuscaloosa and I personally love it.
