NFL Rumors (Trades/Free Agents)

I don't understand why people drool over cannon's for arms. How often is your team going to be throwing 70 yard bombs?

I'm trying to think of an NFL team that has historically loved the "vertical passing game". Give me some time, I'll come up with it.

What they got for him, and the elimination of the 'Schaub is better' crowd should make Atlanta fans very happy. I don't think that anyone can make an honest prediction of how Schaub will do, but right now, it looks like Atlanta came out way ahead on this deal.
Agree 100% it will be 2 or 3 years down the road before we can really know who got the better end of the deal. I usually don't think Mel Kiper ever has anything good to say but I found myself agreeing with one point that he brought up. Last night on the radio they were asking Mel what he thought of the trade. He brought up the fact that coming out of college nobody had anything good to say about Schaub and that the same could be said for Tom Brady. But he said lets face it is he really going to be Tom Brady? Then he talked about how this situation reminds him a lot of what happend with A.J. Feely. A.J. Feely was a QB who really impressed a lot during preseason games or in limited game action. Dolphins made the trade for him thinking this would give them a franchise QB and well we all know how that turned out.
I'm not saying Kiper is right...but I thought the comparison of Feely and Schaub was fair and he brought up a good point.

Until the Texans make massive improvements on their offensive line it really makes little difference whether it is Schaub or Superman making the reads on Sundays in Houston. Great deal for the Falcons in my view, questionable benefit for the Texans - it will however be interesting to see if they finally do line building on Draft Day.

after passing on Bush and now trading 2 2nd rounders for Schaub I'd be so pissed a Texans fan.....what is this organization doing? Can Scaub really be that much more valued than Carr, especially when theres no way of evaluating either in a fair way at all?

Well Carr really has worked out all that great, so it is time for a change and thats what they are doing. They picked a great guy to fill the QB spot who has a lot of potential. I agree with the trade.

I agree it's time for a change for them, but it's kind of hard to judge Carr when he's spent more time on his ass then upright.

So what's the rumor on Carr? Obviously they are not going to keep him on as a high paid backup? Draft day trade or sooner?

I think the Bears would be very wise to jump on Carr. Although I doubt they will, I think it would benefit both of them. Two seconds of protection would really aid Carr and a QB with half of brain would do the same for the Bears.

We will never know how good any Texan QB can be unless they put together a formidable O-Line, it'll improve pass protection and establish a respectable running game. But I agree it was time for a change.

Maybe the Texans will take the fact that their O-Line sucks and spend some time on the O-Lineman in the draft because you aint going anywhere if you dont have a good O-line, it doesnt matter who you have in the backfield or throwing the ball, but that's a little off the subject about draft predictions....back to Carr.

IMO (not from anywhere else) I have a couple teams that should be a little interested in Carr. The Green Bay Packers could be interested in him. I dont want Carr to be leading the Pack, but I guess it can be a possibility. Next on my list would be the Eagles. McNabb is getting a little old and common injuries are contemplating his playing time. Carr is still somewhat young, and could be a possibility for Reid. Next is the Detroit Lions. Depending on what they do on draft day, the Lions should show some interest in Carr. Once again these are all my opinions on teams that might need a QB for the future.

I think he would be a good pickup for the Pack, I think the if the Eagles want a QB, they could draft Troy Smith. He is very similar to McNabb and McNabb could be a very good mentor to Troy.

A Couple New Rumors from SI.COM....

Link

The Raiders were intrigued with Daunte Culpepper last offseason before he was dealt to Miami. Now there is a chance they might be able to land him without any compensation. He could be the perfect bridge, the quarterback to play until the Raiders deem potential No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell ready to take the field.
-- NFL Network
The Giants are engaged in trade talks with the Broncos for Pro Bowl middle linebacker Al Wilson, a team official said last night. The NFL Network reported last night that the Lions and Eagles have also discussed a trade for Wilson with the Broncos recently.
-- Newark Star-Ledger
The eighth overall draft pick and the two second-round choices the Falcons received from Houston in exchange for backup quarterback Matt Schaub on Thursday likely will be used to address several needs, not to trade up to land Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson.

heh, that's the other thing that bothers me. do other teams get their projected draft picks based off of the history of the team? how is that relevant?

Only relevant if the one who established the historical precedent for said team is still involved with said team, hence in the case of the Raiders, still somewhat relevant I'd say.

Big Papa;789248; said:
True, but strong arms aren't only for the long throws. Needed for sharp, strong, medium throws as well.

stxbuck;789459; said:
Go back and watch the scUM St. game from 05'. A couple of Troy's intermediate lasers went straight through the MSU DB's hands and boom-right in the breadbox to Teddy and Santonio for 6. A Qb w/ an arm weaker than Troy would be looking at pick 6's the other way. Next to accuracy/field smarts, arm strength is the most important thing for a QB.

zBuckeye10z;789486; said:
Because at least you know as a coach that you can throw the 70 yard bomb play into the playbook and know you have a good chance of getting it completed. And if he has the big arm and is accurate with it, you obviously know that he can throw medium and be even more accurate.
Arm strength is needed for the 10 and 15 yard out-routes. That's really what separates college-caliber QBs from NFL-caliber QBs, and that's the biggest reason why many great college QBs never make it in the NFL.
