NFL Discussion (Official Thread)

These celebrations are really getting ridiculous. I always thought that the celebrations should be spontaneous and not planned. Seems like Chad Johnson is putting more importance on doing a celebration than having his team win. Apparently he doesn't care if the team gets penalized and/or he gets suspended/fined just as long as he gets to do his celebration (and all the publicity that will come with it). Give me a break on this one, he is using an animal. I don't remember ever the seeing truly great and "classy" receivers like Rice, Largent, Carter, and Warfield, etc. doing anything like this.

Re: "I might get in trouble for what I'm going to do, but it's worth it."

and

Re: "This is going to be the greatest celebration of all time, man," he said. "I actually use an animal."

Maybe the NCAA rule prohibiting "excessive celebrations" was not such a bad idea after all.

Bengals' Johnson planning new celebration
The Bengals receiver suggested Tuesday that he has a special touchdown celebration planned for Cincinnati's game on Christmas Eve, one that will top his Riverdance, his end zone putt and his sideline proposal from earlier this season.
A surrogate reindeer, perhaps?
"On the highway, I hit a deer," Johnson said Tuesday, insisting he was serious and that the animal wasn't hurt. "I kept him. He's at home in the garage. I'm going to use him for the celebration this weekend. He's a prop. They might suspend me for the last game, but I think this one is worth it."
Even if Johnson is serious -- and, with him, there's no telling -- coach Marvin Lewis would certainly put his foot down. So Johnson's scheme may never get beyond the talking stage.
He wasn't joking about his desire to come up with a celebration that will keep fans talking long after the Bengals' last regular-season home game.
Fans in Detroit booed when he merely handed the ball to an official following his touchdown during a 41-17 victory Sunday that clinched the AFC North title. It was only the second time this season that he didn't celebrate a touchdown -- the other came when the officials needed time to decide if he had scored, spoiling the moment.
"But this Saturday, I'll be back to my old self," he said. "You can look forward to the celebration being part of something that has to do with Christmas. It's going to be fun. I might get in trouble, so I might as well let that out now. I might get in trouble for what I'm going to do, but it's worth it."
Johnson was excited by the thought of getting a deer into the end zone routine. His Riverdance brought him national attention as a hoofer. Now, he's fixated on hooves. "This is going to be the greatest celebration of all time, man," he said. "I actually use an animal."

You know...Chad Johnson is one of the most respected recievers inside the NFL. He goes about it the right way. I think he's bringing positive attention to himself and to Cincinnati...plus he's putting up the numbers, AND THE WINS, to prove it. If you know anything about Bengal football, and Chad Johnson, you know he is a team first guy who is not going to hurt his team. He doesn't care about getting fined...that won't stop him. But he has asked refs about stuff, and if they say they will flag him, he won't do it. He tries to work it out so he can just get fined and not flagged. He won't do anything this weekend that would get him suspended...he just wants you to watch.

Yeesh. These guys are just being silly. They aren't hurting anyone, nor are they embarassing anyone other than themselves.

I don't have a problem with endzone celebrations of any form, even the sell phone-type silliness. The guys look ridiculous doing their dances, but if that's the bggest problem with the NFL, the NFL is doing something right.

Couldn't agree more. Good post.

Endzone celebrations are cute when they are spur-of-the moment or unexpected. When they are planned, and become a sideshow in themselves, it makes a mockery of professionalism. Act like you've freakin' been there before.

It's funny how Bengal fan suddenly condones this kind of behavior, when it involves their "Playoff Moses". Take out every instance of "Chad Johnson" and replace it with "Terrell Owens", "Randy Moss" or "Plaxico Burress" and you would all be bashing it. Hypocricy isn't a flattering look.

Chad Johnson is a phenomenal athlete with a mouth and ego to match. I'm not sure that I'd take any other receiver's raw talent outside of Randy Moss. That being said, I have zero respect for a guy that is all about marketing himself. Take your Chad Johnson and give me Marvin Harrison, Deion Branch, Torry Holt or Hines Ward. Maybe someday he'll grow up and become a leader through actions and learn to shut his mouth.

Have you ever seen Chad Johnson interviewed?

He's one of the most humble guys I've ever seen. When asked if he considers himself one of the best receivers in the league, he said, " No, I've never even been to one playoff game so I can't be considered one of the best like Harrison, Moss, etc... until I do so on a consistent basis."

I do think it's excessive but it's not on par with standing on the Star at Texas Stadium and imitating Ray Lewis's entrance dance.
