New York Knicks (2x NBA Champions)

The Knicks will sell more tickets, but I'm not convinced they're a better TEAM now with Melo. They made a bad defensive team even worse because he plays none.

They essentially replaced Gallinari and Chandler - who combined to score 50 points last night for Denver - with Melo and Ronny Turiaf.

They didn't get better and that's the whole absurdity of it...and the nba in general. It's a superstars league now. If you want to watch a good basketball game, the nba is no longer for you. Sure it's exciting to the young, casual fan because it's loaded with unreal athletes doing crazy shit, but for fans of the real game of basketball (like me), forget it. No team concept, no fundamentals, no sportsmanship...it's a 48 minute rap video now.

As for Carmelo, he's a perpetual malcontent. With the new cba being hammered out, it's gonna be hard for the knicks to get the supporting players that they would need to win a title. Soon as the New York fans realize they can't win with fatmelo and the worlds oldest 29 year old, they'll turn on him and he'll start bitching for another trade.

If Knicks fans think Carmelo will play defense like that game in and game out they are going to be a wee bit disappointed.

True Dat: Honestly, with all Karl's been through, I like the idea of him getting the peace of mind of coaching guys who'll likely play harder than what they had, whether or not they'll actually be any better.

Denver will be better for this deal.

Marshmellow is fat and would have become even more of a cancer.

Billups, while clearly not a driver for this deal doesn't have a ton left in the tank.

The Knicks are now built around a fat guy who hogs the ball, a guy who is on his last legs and a guy in Amare with bad knees. Add to that the system run by the Knicks is absolutely not suited for what those three guys bring to the table.

Awesome :slappy:

Is that seriously the best analysis you can come up with?

"Melo is fat, Amare has bad knees, and Billups' career is about over." Yeah, that really summarizes the entire situation.

Nevermind that Anthony is one of the top 3 or 4 scorers, and top 10 player overall, in the NBA. Nevermind that Amare has had a fantastic year and was carrying the Knicks on his "bad knees" the whole season while entering the MVP conversation. It's true that Billups is clearly on the back end of his career, but he still has plenty of talent and the legs to give the Knicks leadership and big plays in close games. He may not be able to give them 42-45 minutes a night, but he is still a great PG and can do big things for them in the playoffs.

I'm not trying to say that the Knicks are automatically title contenders, because they aren't yet, but they are definitely going to be a good team. In all reality, the significant players that they lost in the trade were Raymond Felton and Danilo Galinari, and they got Carmelo Anthony and a few seasons of Chauncey Billups in return. They will improve.

It won't work with D'Antoni though. His floor general likes to play games in the 80's and 90's while D'Antoni likes to score 120.

While having a guy who can slow it down and be a leader is nice, it conflicts with what the head coach wants to do. The same can be said for Melo. He's an amazing scorer, but he likes the ball in isolation. He isn't an open-court runner. It contrasts with what D'Antoni has been teaching and building his offense around. That's exactly why Felton was there...to push the ball in the open-court.

I like the players New York has, but the system isn't conducive to the strengths of their players anymore. If these guys were playing for Popovich, Carlisle, Phil Jackson, etc, I'd say they will be contenders by the end of the year. But not with D'Antoni who I think is an awesome coach. He's just caught in a weird spot now....

I agree. I guess we'll have to see how well D'Antoni can make it work for this season and probably the next. The talent is there, but maybe NY will eventually have to find another coach who will be a better fit.

Regardless, as long as the Knicks can atleast manage to keep the Heat out of the NBA Finals than that is a complete success for me
