New York Knicks (2x NBA Champions)

Sports History:

On this day in 1950 - Nat Clifton’s Harlem Globetrotter contract is purchased by the New York Knicks making the talented athlete the first black to sign a deal to play in the National Basketball Association. Prior to his career in the NBA, 'Sweetwater' played first base for the Chicago American Giants in the Negro Leagues.

NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony has told the Denver Nuggets he will not sign the nearly $65 million contract extension he has been offered unless he is traded to the New York Knicks, a source told ESPN.com on Sunday.

The source, using the most definitive language possible, confirmed what has been widely speculated around the NBA over the past two months as Anthony has been at the center of trade talks involving numerous teams..

Knicks acquire Melo for the whole team

IT'S OVER: CARMELO ANTHONY IS A KNICKERBOCKER
After months of nauseating speculation, innuendo, and rumor -- the trade sending Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks was finalized on Monday night.
What can we say? We laughed, we cried, we threw up a little. Or a lot. The Denver Post reports that the Nuggets get Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, the Knicks' 2014 first-round draft pick, the Warriors' 2012 second-round pick, the Warriors' 2013 second-round pick and $3 million in cash. Anthony will go to New York, along with Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Anthony Carter, and Renaldo Balkman. The league won't be able to approve the trade until tomorrow, but the trade has been confirmed by a few different insiders now and we don't expect any more shenanigans. This signals the beginning of a shortened run up to the trade deadline. As for Melo? His value should remain relatively the same. Feb 21, 10:22 PM

reminds me of when Phoenix traded for Shaq....just a bad combination with a running team.

Carmelo plays suspect defense, is a ball-stopper, and doesn't create for teammates.

On top of that, Raymond Felton is a beast in the open court going back to his UNC days. Chauncey Billups will be half as productive in D'Antoni's system, You just made an open court team a team built for half-court sets overnight.

And Gallinari is still developing. And Gallinari shows flashes of being in Carmelo's league. I don't get this trade at all.

Now the Knicks put all of their eggs in the Deron Williams/Chris Paul basket and hope the labor talks allow them to sign a 3rd star.

This is what the NbA is now. It's all about the superstars. Go out and load up on as many superstars as you can. Damn the expense. I know I sound like a broken record, but fuck today's nba. It's unwatchable. It's a glorified aau circuit. It's pure garbage.

I thought it was obvious that New York is where Melo wanted to go. Why didn't he/they just wait till the off season to make the deal work? Donnie Walsh was on the verge of turning the franchise around until the owner had to stick his head in the door and trade away everyone that mattered (not named Amare). Fuck the NBA. I'll root for the Thunder and Blake Griffin from here on out.

Melo wasn't willing to forego the $15 mil or so that he would've had to give up had he waited til free agency.

As a Knicks fan, I'm sad to see those players go, but the Knicks will be better for this deal.

I would have liked to see NY keep Gallinari or Felton, but I think they're still going to come out of it better. Billups is getting old, but he's still good enough to keep that team together and to be a leader. I haven't seen much of Brewer the last few seasons, but i know he's got a ton of talent and potential so hopefully that'll show with the Knicks.

If nothing else, NY should atleast make it that much harder for Miami to make it to the finals. Boston, Orlando, Chicago, Atlanta, and now New York are going to give them a hell of a time.
