New York Knicks (2x NBA Champions)

Defense wins championships, even in the NBA.

Absolutely. Which is why I didn't say I could see them winning an NBA title.

But you can win one series with average defense (I would consider the new Knicks an average defensive team) and a great offensive performance. Which is what I think the Knicks are capable of producing, and beating a more highly regarded team such as the Celtics or Heat.

It's silly how because he has a West Baltimore tattoo or played a character from there in a movie, you're assuming that the Knicks weren't his childhood team or that he isn't now fully motivated and happy because he's playing in one of the best arenas in the NBA, in front of one of the best fanbases in the NBA, and with another top 10 NBA player.

Yeah, the Knicks point guard is older, Melo's never been on the All-NBA defensive team, and Amare has had knee problems in the past. But the Knicks also have two of the best scorers in the league, and Chauncey compliments them PERFECTLY because he is such a great knock-down 3 point shooter. They still have to upgrade the center position if they want to be serious contenders, and their bench is pretty thin, but I wouldn't be remotely shocked to see them knock off the Heat or the Celtics in a playoff round. Any time you have three guys who can put it in the hoop like Amare, Melo, and Billups, you have a shot.

He didn't play a character in the movie...he was in the movie. Because he is considered a Baltimore native and it was a call-out to the rough street-life in Baltimore to stop giving information to the police, hence the name "Stop Snitchin". It was part of the low-point in Melo's career when he was making mistake after mistake.

I don't disagree that maybe the Knicks were his childhood favorite and he's always wanted to play there. It's just revisionist history to act like he's always been associated with New York. He never was. Even when he played at Syracuse, people thought of him as being from Baltimore.

Either way, it still doesn't change my view on the Knicks. They aren't a title contender until they bring a coach in who fits the personnel. At this given moment, Mike D'Antoni isn't that. My opinion would change if Chris Paul or Deron Williams were running the show.

That isn't a knock on Chauncey. I love Chauncey Billups game. But he isn't suited to run D'Antoni's system. And Melo isn't really a fit either. D'Antoni's system revolves around quick shots and pushing the tempo. Melo is an iso player who likes the ball on the elbow or in the post, and he freezes the ball as he waits for space to clear. He's an amazing scorer, but it's completely against D'Antoni's system.

Something has to give.

My guess is New York has a new Head Coach by 2013.

And I love D'Antoni. He keeps getting caught in weird spots though.

I love Chauncey, in a man crush sort of way, but his three point shooting is streaky. He is deadly from mid range and on the drive to the basket, and one of the best free throw shooters ever. On the Nuggets, he was the third best 3 point shooter.

And on top of that, he compliments them perfectly in a early 2000's Detroit Pistons type of way. If D'Antoni was running a Scott Brooks, Popovich, Doc Rivers style of ball I'd agree. I think New York would be legitimate title contenders if they played a slower style suited for Chauncey and Melo.

It's not a coincidence IMO, that Denver is playing their best basketball of the year after Melo and Billups left. Neither of those guys even fit what George Karl likes to do. I'm not crazy enough to say Denver is a better team without Billups and Melo, but they have guys who fit that system much better since Melo and Billups left.

And Karl and D'Antoni's systems are pretty similar.

New York should recruit Pat Riley to come out of the GM Box.

But I heard the Knicks were "back" when they got Carmelo? After all, he and Stoudemire have zero championships between them.

I haven't paid much attention to Anthony the last couple of years, but when did he get so chubby ?

I can't see this team beating the Heat in a 7 games series, let alone beating the Celtics. Don't get me wrong though, I want them to sweep the Heat if they meet in round one. Would be a fun series.

New York 131
Toronto 118

Classic example of why the Knicks will be lucky to get out of the first round of the playoffs. How many scores like that do you see in them?
