In 1987, Ohio State had a #2 that missed his senior season because he accepted improper benefits (money from an agent). What Chris Spielman and other members of that team expected to be a NC run (TSN had them preseason #2) ended up being a 6-4-1 debacle that got Earle Bruce fired.

In 2002, Ohio State had a #2 that unexpectedly (unexpected to some anyway) returned for his senior season. You ALL remember how that turned out.

In 2011, we may well relive 1987. The coach may get blamed, the QB may get blamed (Tom Tupa was booed at his Senior Day introduction), and a shit-ton of balast may get launched from the bandwagon.

Or, Fickell may shock the world. To be honest, I kind of expect a good season in spite of all the new faces and a rookie QB.

But if this is another '87; bring it on. We recovered from that; we'll get over this. More importantly, the team will get past this.

The question is: Will you still be there when they do; or are you balast?

The record of that '87 team's previous three seasons was 9-3, 9-3, and 10-3. In fact, Bruce's teams went 9-3 every single year from 1980 through 1985...the only reason we had 10 wins in 1986 was we played 9-3 again and then got an extra game. They never were, and probably never were going to be, national champioship caliber.

Our record during the three seasons coming into this one is 10-3, 11-2, and 12-1. The team as a whole has experience more success coming into 2011 than did Bruce's team going into 1987. I think we have more talent stockpiled, and despite not having Pryor, Posey, Herron, etc., on the field the first five games (Pryor not all season, of course), we'll still have more talent fielded than any of our five opponents. I think the team plays with a huge chip on their shoulders and Fickell will only fire them up. While I 'm not quite going to predict a stuning national championship season, this team is flat out going to fuck some teams up...

As long as we use whomever our QB is to the best of his abilities, I have no problem with running the ball down anyone's throat.

Besides, our pass protection has been atrocious in recent years, so running may not be a bad idea :-p

Agreed on all counts. That 87 team was a disappointment on a number of levels that had nothing to do with the absence of Cris Carter.

This team has a better offensive line, much better running backs, better receivers, a MUCH better defensive line and a better defensive backfield. In fact, Spiels may be the only guy from that team that would see the field for this team; but don't tell coach Peterson I said that (he played on the OL for that team). I usually agree with Spiels, but I have to go with Milwood on this one: That 87 team was not a Cris Carter away from a championship.

On the defensive side we are going to kick the [Mark May] out of some people....that being said

If Coach Hazell was still here I would agree with you completely. With Bolls calling the plays I don't know. The combination of a new, inexperienced QB and a OC that many of us are still surprised is still here, should lead to an interesting offensive season to say the least.

I have a feeling that Fickell calls a lot of the plays. Keep in mind that although it appeared that Hazell was calling the plays last year, Tressel had approval over every single play.
