Negative Recruiting Tactics and Silent Verbals (split then merged)

Charlie Weis has demonstrated that his ethical thresholds differ somewhat from the mainstream of collegiate head coaches. I guess when several coaches in succession have proven to be great disappointments, your criteria for selecting the next one become a little different -- even if you are a Roman Catholic church-supported institution. It's a little disheartening.

Weis refutes Cumbie accusation

ND coach calls allegation of negative recruiting 'amusing'

By Jeff Carroll
Irish Sports Report

Does the "N" in Notre Dame stand for "negative"?

Not according to ND coach Charlie Weis.

Weis on Thursday flatly denied allegations from Clemson University freshman Jamie Cumbie that Notre Dame coaches had commented negatively on Clemson in an attempt to talk Cumbie out of his verbal commitment to the school last summer.

"I find it quite amusing that a student-athlete already enrolled at another university has decided to be the team spokesman on Notre Dame recruiting practices," Weis said in a prepared statement issued through the university's office of sports information. "There is an obvious contradiction between how this was handled and what was stated. We do not use negative recruiting tactics. All we do is represent what Notre Dame stands for."

<table style="text-align: left; width: 321px; height: 270px;" align="right" border="0" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="2"> <tbody><tr> <td style="vertical-align: top;"> <script language="JavaScript"> <!-- OAS_AD('Middle'); //--> </script>
</td> </tr> </tbody></table> Cumbie told the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier earlier this week that Notre Dame coaches continued to pursue him after he had verbally committed to Clemson. Though he graduated from Morris (Ill.) High School near Chicago, Cumbie grew up in South Carolina and grew up a Clemson fan.

"They said Clemson has a horrible education," Cumbie reportedly told Post and Courier reporter Larry Williams.
Weis denied that.

"If supporting Notre Dame academics can be misconstrued as speaking down on another school's academics, call us guilty," Weis said in the statement. "Coach Dan Darlington, the former head coach at Morris High School, and coach George Dergo, who succeeded him, were on top of everything we were doing. This is an obvious case of negative reporting against Notre Dame by other institutions. Maybe they should look in the mirror."
Maybe it's just me, but did this really require a response if there was nothing to it?
What a smug response too... I'm going to go watch the Fiesta Bowl again :)...

I don't know what it is...but CW comes off as incredibly arrogant in print. Maybe if we could hear his response rather than read it..it wasn't so dismissive, but the guy just reeks of self importance and haughtiness.

Or, maybe, if I heard him speak it would be even worse, I dunno.

If JT or even Carr were in this situation I can't imagine them being 'amused' or pointing the finger at other schools.

I am sure 99% of DI coaches would say they are sorry if the player considered any recruiting messages to be derogatory toward other schools, that is not the standard practice or the intent..but it will be looked into and discussed by the staff to ensure any messages delivered to recruits can not be misconstrued as some sort of negative campaign.

There is no reason to be so disrespectful and to act as if it is the "other" guy's fault. Perception is reality and it is clear to me the player perceived negative tactics...and so CW basically calls him a liar and blasts Clemson. CW doesn't seem to understand that this isn't the NFL...this isn't about contracts...it is about recruiting.

Geez ... Only a candy-ass coach would say he was "sorry" even if he knew he did nothing wrong.

Perhaps. Altho if a player believes ND utilized negative recruiting tactics there is a good chance they did...or at a minimum they sent a message that was left open to interpretation as to it's intent...and that is a communication breakdown by the staff.

I guess you agree that blaming Clemson for this and all but calling the kid a liar is a far better tact. Personally, I see no reason for CW to blame the player or Clemson...better to either say nothing or apologize for any confusion and move on. If he did nothing wrong then there is no reason to particpate in the discussion and be petty in the response

You win with people..Woody said that and I believe it to be true. I get the impression that CW thinks he wins with Charlie.

JMO....and it isn't an anti ND thing...I have been a fan of just about every ND coach in my lifetime. Charlie just comes off as smug and arrogant to me. No doubt he has done some class things as well...but in print he just comes across as cocky and abrupt.

We will see what happens in the long run in South Bend.

So a 50 year old head football coach of a well-respected major university is going to get in a media war with an 18 year old kid on a different team half-way across the country? :shake:

Someone should've told Charlie to just let it go. The whole "stay above the fray" or "take the high road" come to mind...

Saying, "I'm sorry Mr. Cumbie feels this way..." is not apologizing Chief.

In fact, it is the same smug haughtiness with just a little garnish to take the edge off and actually turn some public perspective in ND's favor. Instead, Weis took the opportunity to further embed his reputation of arrogance.

I find Ianello's comments amusing...it's only neagtive recruiting if you say something that is untrue? I don't agree with that...I don't think you have to make up a bunch of lies to negatively recruit.

High comedy. Most (if not all) posters have already made up their mind about ND/Weis regardless of what he says. Talk about arrogance...

Academically, Clemson has nothing on ND or almost every Big 10 school.

Weis did nothing wrong and probably told the truth. And that's why Clemson is probably going to be upset about this.

Move along, nothing to see here. Keep moving.

Yeah... But Charlie makes it so easy... Every time he talks he sounds more and more smug...

I think the thing for me with this is why reply and sound worse? Is an 18 year old kid really going to bring down ND? Just let it go... Nothing needed replied to from Weis's end...

The reason this article really got my attention, is the media portrays Weis as some revolutionary coach who is taking college football by storm, through his recruiting and coaching. Now I think the man is a very smart coach, but as a recruiter he's as bush league as it gets.

It seems like in Weis's world every opposing coach is about to get fired, or opposing coaches are lying to recruits, however ND is the only program with integrity, please. To him its not all academic reputation and grad rates on the recruiting trail.

If you have the chance you should ask Marc Tyler how many times a ND coach told him that USC is going to make him a LB when he gets on campus. Is that fact? If not does that qualify as negative recruiting?

Sound worse to whom? Bucknuts and those who didn't like him in the first place?

It's pretty obvious Weis is a guy that doesn't take crap from people in the press, so he certainly isn't going to let some knucklehead misspeak (lie, lie, lie) about Notre Dame's recruiting tactics.

I'm sure that if Weis refused comment, the same posters would have been wondering why Tuna Jr. has his piehole shut.

And what exactly is this young man's motivation to lie?
