Negative Recruiting Tactics and Silent Verbals (split then merged)

" completely refuted "

Your standard of proof for "completely" is awfully low.

Edit - to anyone late to this thread, my quote above addressed a remark that has been deleted. The claim was that the Kid's statement re ND has been "Completely refuted"

So a 50 year old head football coach of a well-respected major university is going to get in a media war with an 18 year old kid on a different team half-way across the country?

Bingo. If any response was needed it would have been simply to say that ND does not participate in negative recruiting. End of sentence.

To go further and speculate on the motives of a someone 30 years your junior is at best in poor taste.

This reminds me somewhat of the way LLLoyd reacted to the 'sniffing incident' at OSU. He had reason to be ticked, but it was a lose-lose for him to go beyond a minimal response. And when he brought it up again before last years game I knew Michigan was in trouble.

I have never felt the need to go on someone else's board and defend Jim Tressel and can't imagine I ever will.

That Weiss behaves the way he does is not terribly surprising our out of character for a football coach. But Notre Dame fans can not go on both defending him and also saying ND is just a little bit better than your average bear.

Actually, I've been lurking for over a year now because, as a St. Ed's alum, a couple of guys at the ol' alma mater are featured on this forum. The only thing I was defending was common sense.

I don't see why ND can't have higher standards academically and a coach that shoots from the hip. Did I miss something that states ND must have a modest coach? If the ND athletic deparment had a problem with the statement, that wouldn't have released it. Not everyone can be Lou Holtz.

I always love ND's recruiting tatics

if you really want a dose of reality try this:

No bowl wins in 10 years.

2-7 vs MSU

a 3 loss season is their best in years

their last two coaches have lasted on average of 4 years

they beat two winning teams last year in a 7-5 Michigan, and a 8-4 Navy.

and the highlight of last year's season: Coming close to beating USC. Something that Fresno State came close to doing.

The only thing I was defending was common sense.

Really now? If true, then perhaps you should employ some of that good stuff...the article you cite where the coach "completely refuted" the situation also contained the same coach saying Cumbie is not the type of kid to lie or make something up like this. Then, he later defends Weis and does say he is unaware of any negative recruiting. However, common sense should tell you that a HS coach in Illinois is going to keep good relations with a school like ND. He saw an opportunity to waffle and defend both sides...he took that opportunity.

If Cumbie wasn't bothered by Weis contacting him after the commitment, why would he complain to his coach? If he didn't tell his coach, how would the coach know? Plausible deniability.

Common sense imho.

Exactly...And by responding, Weis has put himself in a position of calling this kid a liar...The same kid he just spent however much time recruiting to be part of the "ND Family". Besides the obvious "sour grapes" implications here, this has to make others (recruits) wonder what kind of "family" really exists at ND...

"No comment" would have gone a long way in this situation...

Who said anything about academic standards? Jumping the gun on that defense?

In the same vein as your "common sense" would also tell that perhaps the coach doesn't want to sell out his big recruit for a variety of reasons (completely reasonable).

All of this is in the eyes of the beholder. You don't like ND/Weis, Weis is lying. You like ND/Weis, the kids is lying. I am curious of those who are indifferent think (I have my guesses).

Are you serious? Do you really think these phantom post cards exist?

Look Bucknuts, I know I'm not going to change your minds, but seriously, can anyone here look at this situation rationally?

If you want some more positive and rational responses, you might want to try addressing people here as Ohio State fans, not Bucknuts.

Very serious...and how do you know where I stand on Weis? Have you read this entire thread? Obviously not.

Question: Do you have ANY form of experience in today's recruiting...I don't mean reading articles, but text messages, daily thoughts, etc?

I have my guess.

Am I the only who thinks the constant Weis/Notre Dame discussion is getting nauseating and repetitive?

I don't know what Notre Dame fans expect when hanging out on an OSU board.

Isn't there a Notre Dame Board they can hang out on and discuss Weis's greatness together?
