Negative Recruiting Tactics and Silent Verbals (split then merged)

Actually, Thump, I don' t think it's a good point.. Have you forgotten that the original post was merely the positing of an article that is "newsworthy" in the recruiting game - which I might add, is one of the main points of this board's existence.

I'm referring to all of the ND/ Weis discussion/ bashing as a whole on this site.

Hopefully it'll die down when the season starts.

Well, the fat jokes are played, I'll give ya that... I just don't believe this thread is a good .. well.. it may be since the DJ arrived.. indicator of the point you're trying to make. It's a legit recruiting story, and its certainly appropriate on a site that follows recruiting as we do.

I agree that this thread is appropriate but it inevitably turns into blah blah blah...

FWIW.....

In a statement released through Clemson sports information director Tim Bourret, Cumbie stood by his claim that Notre Dame compared the education levels at the two schools, but appeared to back off the characterization of the ND coaching staff's tone.
"In an article in the Charleston (S.C.) Post Courier earlier this week I was quoted as saying that Notre Dame recruiters had said Clemson's education was horrible," Cumbie said Thursday. "I did not characterize our conversations properly in that interview.
"No one from Notre Dame, either in writing or in general conversation, said Clemson had a horrible education. Notre Dame made a comparison in different areas between the two schools and the facts made Notre Dame look better. One of the areas was education. I am sure everyone makes comparisons during the recruiting process. It didn't bother me at all.
"No one from Notre Dame did anything wrong in their recruitment and I wish them the best this season."

<HR SIZE=7>No further comment on the post cards....but he certainly did not take them off the table.

No matter what actually happened, or didn't happened, CW's response to the situation cemented my belief that he is arrogant and crass. Further, it remains my opinion that this is going to hurt him at the college level if he doesn't tone it down.

The discussion went way beyond this...but personally this was my point all along and the ND fan doing most of the posting already acknowledged CW is an arrogant ass at times. OK, I added the ass part, but he agreed none the less.

Before you Irish fans get all worked up...I said this is my opinion. Don't pretend YOUR opinion is gospel and mine is less valuable than yours...some ND fans have a nasty habit of presenting their opinion as fact and discounting any opposing views as baseless drivel....spare us both a marathon journey down that path.

Big surprise there. Although, I am sure more than a few of you still subscribe to the contrary.

Agreed.

It's too bad I can't get my one ND friend (who is also an OSU fan when they aren't playing) to post on in this thread (he is a BP member but never posts). He seems to be the great voice of reason when it comes to the ND nation. He is a self-described ND fan by birth (father and sister both went there) and OSU fan by choice (grew up in Columbus). Having talked with him about this very topic (Cumbie and Weis' response) I can tell you that he is a little tired of what he perceives to be Weis' attitude (an NFL coach trying to relate to college and high school athletes). I think Weis' response to the Cumbie situation is a classic example of that...his response sounds like something Larry Brown would have issued in a statement through the Knick's front office after another blow-up with Stephon Marbury. Or a canned response from the Andy Reid in response to TO when he was in Philly. The reseponse from Weis doesn't sound like a college coach who is in-touch and sensitive to high school and college student athletes and all their quirks. His style just seems better suited to the robots of the NFL. Maybe I am wrong, but that is the perception that both myself and my ND homer friend seem to get from having watched Charlie over the last year.

I added the bold. It seemed to me that the word 'horrible' in the original article is what made the story larger than it deserved to be. I didn't doubt that ND coaches compared the 2 institutions academically, but I did doubt that an ND coach would used the word 'horrible' to describe Clemson's academics.

That doesn't clarify whether 'negative reruiting' was used or not. It seems that the young man just wants to go to Clemson and forget about this incident. I can't blame him. He probably wishes he hadn't said anything.

IMO, It's another example of something getting more attention than it deserved because it involved ND.

I'll bet this makes the ND coaches be more careful in what they say, and how they say it, to recruits in the future.

From my perspective, ND can't lose a couple games fast enough in order for the spotlight to get off of them this year.

Agreed. Although, as I posted earlier, I think many will agree that Hayes was an ass, but because he was YOUR ass, you're ok with some of his antics and some of you will blindly defend him to the death. It's the exact same situation on the other end. Weis may be an ass, but he's OUR ass.

You guys may not like it, but its the truth.

Amazing! How do you do that HINYG8?

A reminder that this thread is in the recruiting forum.

I think at this point we should stop arguing about Woody's temper, Weis's weight, the 'THE' in front of tOSU, and anything to do with perceived arrogance on either side.

edit - all of that stuff has (hopefully) been moved out.

It needs to stay out of this thread.

Good point. I'm not a mod over here, but if someone wants to undertake the project of splitting these somewhere else, it would get this stuff to a different forum. Just a suggestion...no pressure on anyone.

I'm temporarily closing this thread while I perform a split.

OK, I deleted a few posts, edited a few posts, and split off 94 others.

NOTE TO EVERYBODY. This is the recruiting forum. It's not a place for chest-thumping or urination contests.

This thread is now open again. If things get out of hand again, it'll be closed.
