Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

If you want to sit at the big boy table and play with the whales, you need to ante up. Nebraska is only now catching up to Iowa and Michigan St in terms of where assistant coaching salaries were before the 2012 season.

That's because people in this state tend to think that "Oh well, we've gotten this far without paying that much."

In my opinion, that's garbage. If you want to continue to be progressive, then you have to think outside the box. Anything else becomes stagnant.

Of course, the bluehairs control the $$$ in this state.

Your statement conveniently ignores how those players would then go to other programs that were not Nebraska, creating a trickle down effect for these programs and build them up to the point where they could start beating Nebraska.
And you're conveniently ignoring reality. Even though "those players would then go to other programs that were not Nebraska", Nebraska kept killing teams for a full decade after the reduction. Those other players got fucking steamrolled by Nebraska from 93-97. Those other players comprised the bottom of the 120-scholarship, then 88-scholarship, limit under which Nebraska had to recruit...so Nebraska just kept the top 85 they would've gotten anyways and let other have the remaining 3-35 players go elsewhere. The 85-scholarship limit did help level the playing field significantly throughout college football overall, but it did nothing to hurt Nebraska. In a way, it may have even strengthened them by causing them to be somewhat more selective in who they took.

Sorry I haven't been around. It's been really busy at HuskerBoard, as you all can imagine, and I haven't had much time to converse elsewhere.

I was glad to see that smarter minds prevailed in this situation. Firing Pelini for something he did two years ago, that the Athletic Department has known about since the day he said these things, would have been utterly stupid. I don't know if you guys listened to the audio, but the woman you hear in that recording is our Sports Information Director, Chris Anderson. It's not like the administration would have been blindsided by this - and it's not as if Bo hasn't ever said anything like this before that recording was made - or after, actually.

I'm mostly glad the asshat that leaked this won't be getting what he wanted - Pelini's ouster. His stated reason for disclosing this, that he was pissed about Bo coming down on Tommie Frazier (even though Bo didn't - but that's another story), is freaking stupid. He's using a sledgehammer to swat a gnat. Really glad they didn't rise to the bait.

Pelini has his on-field problems, as everyone who follows college football knows well enough. His off-field demeanor is not the best, but I'd rather he gets praised or punished for what he does on the field than off the field, barring major asshattery.

So who goes first, Bo, Lane, or Mack?

For Mack, it's retirement. For Lane, it's selling used cars, but what's Bo's future hold? I used to think he'd catch on as a defensive coordinator, but with the way the Husker's d has been getting rolled in games big and small I no longer hold out that hope.
Actually, if Lane follows his historical track of falling upwards, I'd expect him to be elected President in 2016

Bottom line with Nebraska is Bo needs to go. I'm not saying he's a bad coach, I haven't watched them play enough. The problem with Bo is he isn't getting the recruits that a team like Nebraska can get. Why? His personality. In college players choose where they want to go. Bo is an ass. He looks like an ass on the sidelines, he talks like an ass every time I see him interviewed. Plus, he's ugly and has a beer gut. That isn't me being mean or superficial. It's just the truth. Why would a top athlete go play for an ass like Pelini when he can go play for a guy like Les Miles or Urban Meyer or Dabo Swinney or the dozen other coaches that lead top programs that have a great personality. The athletes that Nebraska does get don't go there for Pelini, they go there because it is NEBRASKA. Nebraska has an amazing football tradition, is a good university and has a great fan base. The problem is it's lead by an ass. The first time I really watched a Nebraska game, after the joined the Big Ten, the only thing I remember is him grabbing Martinez by the facemask and screaming in his face, spit flying out of his mouth. Martinez didn't deserve that, and when high school players watch that they don't want to play for him. Plus he's not in shape. A coach that is fit says a lot about him, rather than 'Do as I say, not as I do.' Nebraska needs to drop Pelini, and I've been saying that for years; has nothing to do with the video.

Bret "Douchebag Deluxe" Bielema was able to recruit top-notch OL, WR, DL, and RB to Wisconsin, a school with nowhere near the tradition Nebraska has, despite being a total fucking dickhead...

The situation you've described would read almost identically if you substituted Brian Kelly and Tommy Rees for Pellini and Martinez. Somehow BK manages to recruit.

In much the same fashion, OSU used to stockpile talent in the region to beat Michigan, but now that OSU can't do that, the excess fringe talent is now going to MAC schools, where they beat Michigan.

Well except Coop didn't beat Michigan a lot in this era, but yeah kinda.

If Nebraska was still the power house and was still able to have 95 scholarship players on its roster, things may have been slightly different.

You know it isn't that simple, right? You also seem to be glossing over the two other things that I said changed since 1994 (the rise of Texas and Oklahoma).

And the bolded is a hilarious contradiction so I'll just stop there and disagree to disagree.
