Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

But hey, thanks for playing! Tell him what he's won, Don Pardo.

I fully expect a better answer from Muck, whose superior knowledge can't help but give detailed examples of the improvements made by UNL over the past decade - a decade which has seen unprecedented growth across the NU system and at UNL in particular.

Feel free to offer your own account of UNL's improvements regarding AAU membership indicators (i.e., From 1999 to 2009, the University of Nebraska system had the fifth-largest percentage growth in federally financed research expenditures of any college that was in the top 100 for federal money in 1999), but it's pretty obvious that an over-reliance on agricultural research and a separately-administered off-campus medical school were the key factors that did not help distinguish Nebraska from non-AAU members. And it sounds like the AAU's other presidents may have thought Harvey Perlman was kind of a tool, too.

The overall argument on this situation has already been beaten to a pulp, but it's statements like this that seem extremely myopic. What, praytell, Bay would you expect UNL to diverge into that wouldn't fit the agricultural scheme for advanced research? Because, to me, it's rather simplistic to me that the basis of research at UNL SHOULD be agriculturally based.

As muffler said, this has been beaten to a pulp. Time to move on. But this bears comment:

How prestigious could the AAU actually be if this truly was a factor in the decision to oust NU? Think about it - if they really didn't like Perlman, and that counted against Nebraska, it rather obviates the meaning of the AAU, doesn't it?

First, may I apologize on behalf of the newbie Husker fan (all of 6 posts) who started this diversion from the thread topic of Nebraska Cornhusker FOOTBALL. One of the things that I really enjoy about BuckeyePlanet is how the threads very seldom devolve into arguments & fights about unrelated topics.

Now, back to our discussion about Nebraska Cornhusker FOOTBALL on the BuckeyePlanet COLLEGE FOOTBALL board! :) :neb2:

Ask the AAU: I was just summarizing what appears to be their opinion, not my own. Ag research is well and good and obviously appropriate for a land-grant school in Nebraska, but it just doesn't do it for the AAU honchos.

What particularly hurt Nebraska in those metrics is that as a land-grant institution in a farming state, it gets a large share of its research dollars for agriculture. The entire University of Nebraska system had $13.2-million in federally financed farm-related research in 2008, or about 10 percent of its total federal research dollars, as compared with a nationwide average of about 3 percent.
The AAU, however, does not give such research the same weight in its membership criteria because much of federal support for agricultural work is awarded through formulas and earmarks rather than peer-reviewed grants.

Understood. Just seems disengenuous (not on your part) considering the situation at hand.

Until then, good luck and I hope you win all of your games.

Not sure if this belongs in the ticket forum but I've got some questions about the gameday experience at Nebraska and I'm hoping some of the experienced Husker fans on here can help me. Feel free to respond via PM. Thanks.
1. I'm renting an RV and driving out there for the game. Are there RV parking lots any where around the stadium and what is the best way to obtain a spot in one of these lots?
2. If there are no lots near the stadium where is the next closest area to consider for RV parking?
3. How is taxi service in Lincoln on game day?
4. Other than tailgates, any establishments near the stadium you would recommend for a visiting fan to pre-game prior to kickoff?

Kindly explain what strides needed to be made, what changes were made by Nebraska, and how those fell short.

When you can't do so in any kind of detail whatsoever, go ahead and apologize for talking out of your ass.
.

Are you intentionally channeling the AAU's response to Perlman's presentation?

The reality is that the burden of proof was upon Nebraska to show that they currently met the associations criteria, especially at the Phase I level (competitively funded federal research dollars, national academy membership by faculty, fellowships, citations etc etc).

Nebraska's leadership failed to meet that burden, instead choosing to complain about the unfairness of the criteria.

No you aren't going to find any pity here.

I believe Lot 20 is an RV approved lot that you can pay on arrival. Not for sure though. Here is a link that includes a map of where the lots are.

http://parking.unl.edu/maps/FootballParkingMap.pdf

The map says Lot #20 is a donor lot, but I believe visiting teams set up shop there as well. This next link might have some numbers for you to call if you have questions:

Taxi service on gameday I would guess is pretty tough. Fortunately, the stadium is located on campus and is near the bar/restaraunt district, "O" street. It is also close to the secondary bar/restaraunt disctrict called the "Haymarket" which is on 8th and Q. So most of what you would be looking for is within walking distance. Lot #20 would be about a 15 minute walk to O st. (just a guess). A 10 minute walk to the Haymarket, and a 10 minute walk to the stadium.

Forgot to answer your last question about establishments to check out before the game. There are plenty, but here are some of my favorites for a visiting fan:

Embassy Suites Hotel at 10th and Q. Huge party outside, huge party inside. Inside is free. Go into the lobby and have a few beers. Hopefully a Husker fan will pick up the tab.

Barry's on 9th and Q. This is the traditional old school place to check out. A dive bar/restaraunt that's turns into a big warehouse on gameday. Located in the Haymarket.

Any of the bars on O street. Brother's, Sandy's, Bodega's, Watering Hole (try the wings), Cliffs, you can't miss down there. Especially for a night game.

My favorite restaraunt is Lazlo's at 7th and P st. in the Haymarket.

Hope those help a little!

I don't want or need your pity. This is the whiff I expected. Your ignorance of Nebraska as an academic institution is apparent. You know what you can read off Wikipedia, and that's to be expected.

Lazlo's is a definite, must-go. Best micro brew beer in 500 miles.

I would also suggest Single Barrel, a brand-new bar at 10th & P (the old Boomer's Printing building) where The Sidetrack Band has set up shop.

This isn't about "Nebraska as an academic institution", it's just about Nebraska's status as an AAU member. It sounds like Nebraska has made some nice strides academically over the last decade, so kudos, but as for the AAU there was clearly a standard or model they were looking for in continuing-member institutions, and come review time UNL didn't measure up, by a majority vote which may or may not have been politicized. That all happened.

But I don't think it's a big deal really, obviously Gee is a friend of your school too, and I still feel like Nebraska fits the Big Ten profile--and now you're a part of an even greater academic consortium--the CIC!

Couldn't agree more. The CIC far outweighs the AAU, both by measure of prestige and by tangible benefits to member institutions. I cannot stress enough how excited I am that Nebraska has been allowed into the CIC. While our academic trajectory has decidedly been "up" in the past decade, the CIC should help kick-start an even greater era of growth.

There is no way Nebraska brings to the Big Ten a comparable return to the benefits the Big Ten brings to Nebraska. It is a home run academically, athletically and DEFINITELY a home run for students and fans of Nebraska sports.
