Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

If he's back for a fifth year...oofta. If Frost wants any chance at making it past next season, he'd take the kid aside and say "look, we're going in a different direction, but feel free to transfer anywhere in the B1G West or to _ichigan!"

A few comments:

1) If he graduates this school year, I'd say he should get on to his life after football. He has to be aware of the fact that he a zero chance of playing QB in the NFL. Now if he needs another semester to graduate I would suggest coming back for a 5th year and getting the degree.

2) (If he does decide to play a 5th season) I don't think he's that bad and may be even better under the tutelage of a new QB coach. He still may be Nebraska's best bet for QB1 in 2022.

3) Now Frost should take him aside and tell him, that he is glad he is returning but he's not going to be guaranteed anything next season. Frost should tell him he'll be reviewing the transfer portal for another QB and he wants to have completion for Nebraska's QB1 in 2022

4) Under the new transfer rules, Frost would have no say whatsoever concerning which school he could or couldn't transfer to. I'd suggest he stick it out at Nebraska especially if he would lose any semester hours in a transfer and prolong his graduation.

Regarding point 2 - he may be and if so, that's a huge indictment on Frost, IMO. Martinez has his moments and does have some talent, but that dude wilts under pressure with a quickness. In four years, he's shown no improvement in that area...or anywhere else really. Senior Martinez looks little different from Freshman Martinez. Question is, is that an Adrian Martinez problem or a coaching problem. Frost did can his QB coach today, but it's a bit late in the game.

I think sticking with Frost (for now) is the right move. They've been more competitive this year and at least that's something. But I'd wager his future past next season hinges on finding another QB.

Weren't they the number 2 Offense in the BiG? Just can't finish. Surprised all those guys got the ax. Weird

Read this article. This should answer plenty of questions.

Loyalty, 'but not blind loyalty': Frost retained for 2022, but has reduced salary, buyout

The first-year NU administrator is also aware that there’s no guarantee Frost will work out in Year 5 and beyond.

“I asked Scott this morning ... I said, 'Are you a little uncomfortable?' and he said, 'Yeah,' and I said, 'So am I,'" Alberts said. “That’s how I know we’ve got a great deal. Because both of us are a little bit (uncomfortable).”

That’s why he thought it important to ensure that Frost’s contract was reworked. The deal was most recently reworked in November 2019 and announced on the same day NU lost to Wisconsin to drop Frost’s overall record to 7-14. The way the guarantees worked, Frost would have been due $20.4 million had he been fired after this season and more than $15 million if he was fired after 2022.

That, Alberts said, was “a bad business deal,” though he did not want to get into why he thought former athletic director Bill Moos and current UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green thought it was a good idea at the time to extend Frost's contract to 2026. Alberts was hired to replace Moos in July.

Under the restructured agreement, Frost took a reduction from his $5 million salary to $4 million in 2022. His buyout is also cut in half to $7.5 million should NU decide to fire him after the 2022 season. Alberts declined to give further details, and NU as of Monday night had not responded to a Journal Star request for the updated agreement, but the athletic director suggested that Frost's salary in future years will be more dependent on hitting performance targets rather than being fully guaranteed dollars.

If you were under pressure almost everytime you dropped back, you'd wilt under pressure too. I mean, Martinez does bad all by himself.....he doesn't need the line's help.

“I have to think that part of this decision is based on the other jobs that are open,” Fornelli said. “If you're in Nebraska right now and USC is open, LSU is open — there's a chance we can't rule out Florida coming open at some point, depending on how the next few weeks go, depending on what James Franklin does, Penn State could come open. Where are you on the pecking order of available jobs and who are you going to get to come in?

They were top 15 in the country before the OSU game, and still at #19 after a bad performance: Nebraska 6.59 (ypp) 459.2 (ypg) Next year they could return all their starters, be a top 10 offense for most of the year. Seems odd to get rid of a somewhat successful offensive staff if next year is a make or break.

Either this was a demand by the AD or it's Frost throwing guys under the bus. Not going to change much because it'll still be his offensive identity with the same culture creating issues in tight games.
