Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Report: Iowa State’s Matt Campbell ‘strong candidate’ for Nebraska job

Bill Moos isn’t wasting any time at all.

Saturday morning, Nebraska confirmed that Mike Riley had been dismissed after three seasons as the head football coach of the Cornhuskers. Almost immediately, attention turned to Scott Frost, the former NU quarterback who has UCF unbeaten in his second season with the Knights. In fact, at his press conference, Moos confirmed that he has spoken to people connected to Frost.

Bret Bielema, fired this past week by Arkansas, has also been mentioned as a possibility.

However, FootballScoop.com is reporting that Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell “is a strong candidate for the same job at Nebraska.” One potential sticking point involves some rather significant money. From the website’s report:

Campbell has one of, if not the highest publicly available buyout on record at $9.4 million, which FootballScoop detailed last month. Should Moos meet with Campbell and decide he is the right man for the job it is believed Moos will find a way to get the buyout handled.

Frost would be a homeruns, Campbell a triple, IMO.

I suspect Frost, besides being busy preparing for a conference title game, is waiting to see how this Jimbo/Texas A&M thing shakes out.

Not sure about Free Shoes, but folks up here are thinking it's a done deal.
I think it's interesting that Leach showed that he was interested in leaving WSU. If Frost didn't come here, he'd be the next guy on my speed dial.
Nebraska is going to be a heck of a school to bring back to any type of relevance. Middle of nowhere, not many recruits in state, and must reach out of state pretty far to find talent. The CaliBraska movement was picking up steam, but not fast enough.
IMO Nebraska should go after(of course these are the names if Frost turns down the position) these coaches:
Todd Graham
Bret Bielima
Butch Jones

All with Midwest ties, and could keep Nebraska around the 7-9 win mark and may even have a surprise 10-11 win season if Wisky is in a down year.

Now you are just trolling,

I can't stand this "It's in the middle of the country" argument. Players play for coaches, not for places.

Scott Frost is from a small town called Wood River, near Grand Island. There's less than 3,000 people there. Most people there live below the poverty line. This kid was Mr. Football for the entire state. Was a sure fire bet to go to Nebraska. Nope. Dude took off HALFWAY across the country and played for Bill Walsh in Stanford for a season or two before he got homesick. Came back here, won a Natty in 97.

McKinsie Milton (Frost's QB) is from Hawaii. He got offers from Hawaii, Navy, Oregon (Frost), then when Frost went to UCF - this kid followed him from the West Coast to the East Coast. Now, the kid is the #2 rated passer in the country (right behind Baker Mayfield, who is probably going to get the Heisman). He didn't leave Hawaii and go to Florida just to see Mickey freaking Mouse.....he came because he liked what Frost was selling.

Tebow played for UM not because he wanted to play at Florida - he liked the offense that Coach Meyer ran. He got offers from Bammer, LSU (Jimbo Fisher recruited him), TSUN, and even Joey Freshwater gave him an offer to play at SC.

Mark Ingram Jr went to Bammer to play for Saban because he liked the offense that Saban ran. He was living in Flint, Michigan when he accepted his offer to play. He got offers from Bucky, Iowa, Sparty, and others. He went to Bammer because he knew Saban is a winner, and he wanted to win a championship, and perhaps go to the next level.

Ron Dayne went to high school in New Jersey. Most schools had him as a full back because he was 270 coming out of high school. So how'd he wind up playing for Bucky? Because Barry Al told him he'd play tailback instead of full back. He liked that idea, so there he went. Nuff said there. Same thing kind of happened to their latest back, Taylor. Most places recruited him to be a fullback too. Cryst told him that he'd be playing tailback. Kid is the #3 rusher in the country his freshman year. I mean, it's Bucky of all places....

Hell, Nebraska just got torched by Fant last week (TE from Iowa). I know that kid - he's from right here in Omaha. I'm not saying that the scenery in Nebraska is much better, but damn, just drive through Iowa. You think he passed up a chance to play in front of the home town crowd to go one state over? He was recruited by Oregon, Bucky, Huskers, and a few other teams.

I am tired of the "players don't want to play at [insert location here] because of where it's at" excuse. If a player (and their parents, of course) feel comfortable when that coach sits down at their table to tell them what they have to offer, and where they can take them - THAT'S what gets players to a place.
If a coach has to promote the environment more than the school, team, and facilities - that coach has a problem.

The total educational experience does count. It makes it more likely that a kid from the snowbelt may want to attend a university in California instead of one in the snow belt. That kind of stuff is secondary to the chance to get to the NFL. Universities such as Nebraska and Ohio State must overcome the negatives (or lack of positives) associated with things like proximity to the beach. It means the equation must translate into advantages that outweigh the lack of positives.

Player's don't want to play in Lincoln, NE, it's near nothing and there is little talent in NE. I'll keep stating that and I stand by my opinion. Your history is too far in the past to appeal to kids that are in HS now. The top schools in the country have 1 of 2 things(if not both) scenery and/or recent tradition. Nebraska offers neither, a 16yo no longer care about Tommie Frazier or Grant Wistrom while still in HS. Just like kids don't really care all that much about Eddie George or Shawn Springs in HS, but they do care about Carlos Hyde, Zeke Elliot, Joey Bosa, Cam Heyward, etc.

You can choose not to believe that sentiment all you want, but Nebraska has been toiled in mediocrity for a while now, and recruiting classes have been pretty below average(2 top 20 classes in 10yrs). And to think players only play for coaches is pretty foolish. Kids say constantly that they want to play in a "family atmosphere", and a number go based on majors and academics, nothing to do with coaches. Urban stepped in after OSU had their worst season in 30yrs and kept a class of Tressel and Fickell recruits. OSU has lost a number of kids in the southern region because they wanted to stay closer to home and play for a closer school, not necessarily the coach.

Your Tebow statement is false, Urban was new at UF and Tebow barely knew his offense. His parents were both UF grads and he grew idolizing Wuerffel. He came down to deciding UF because Urban is also a great recruiter and he could stay closer to home, so it was more because of the program instead of the coach.

Yes guys choose schools based on schemes that are run, but also because of the location, and it's foolish to think every kid picks schools based on one criteria. Nebraska is far from NC relevance and has been for quite some time

I respect that opinion, but the only thing that is missing in Lincoln is the right guy at the helm right now. Having been a football coach for 7 years, trust me when I say that there are just as many players that will come to a place to play for a coach as they will because of the locale.
