Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Omaha and it's surrounding areas have about 1.2 million people combined.

How big of a surrounding area are we talking about here? 1/3 of eastern Nebraska, 1/3 of western Iowa, and 1/3 of northwestern Missouri?

The metro area of Omaha is listed at 865,000 and the surrounding areas aren't exactly densely populated.

That's like saying Columbus and it's surrounding area has about 11.5 million people in it.

You're clearly not counting Columbus' Indian and Chinese annexes

No no, lol. Not quite that big. I'm not talking about population - I'm talking about area. Omaha spreads out to the west via annexation of some smaller cities (the latest victim being Elkhorn in 07).

Kansas City is the best example I can think of. Again, Omaha isn't as large as KC - just really spread out. And by doing that, the culture line splits with it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_population

For example - I'm originally from North Omaha, right around 35th and Martin. I live (and work) in West Omaha, however, off of 100th and Fort.

Most African-Americans live in North O, folks of Latino/Mexican ethnic backgrounds live in South Omaha. All the rich folk live out west (LOL).

You might be close. Here is a map of the metro area just to get to 865,000:

It's Omaha's "trade zone" that has 1.2 million, which includes the Lincoln metro area as well.

You guys might be seeing a new QB this year for the Huskers...

Taylor Martinez definately has not regained or kept the starting job from last year.

He just spoke with the media last week....I got this email from Huskers.com about the first scrimmage of the spring:

LINCOLN- With the annual Red-White Spring Game just a week away, the Huskers took the practice fields Saturday morning to continue to gear up for the game. During practice Saturday, Nebraska scrimmaged and ran about 150 plays.

After practice, Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini said he saw some good things from the squad. "It was good. I was really unhappy with our practice yesterday. I don't know whether they knew we were scrimmaging today, but I thought we got a lot done today." Pelini said. "We had a good scrimmage. I saw some good things on both sides; I also saw a lot of things we need to get fixed."

During those 150 plays, Pelini counted two false start penalties, but believes that the whole squad's not game ready and still has room for improvement. "It's about evaluating where they come technique wise, how they're handling their assignments and all those types of things," Pelini said. "We're not game ready, and we're not supposed to be game ready, and we're not game planning each other. We're just out there playing football. We're getting better and we need to continue to get better and we have four more practices to do so."

During the scrimmage, quarterbacks Brion Carnes, Cody Green and Kody Spano took the majority of the snaps and Pelini liked what he saw from the trio. "We gave Brion a good look. Cody Green had a good scrimmage. I thought he did some good things out there. I think they all got to work on their consistency," Pelini said. "Kody Spano did some good things. Across the board we saw some good things, but we saw a lot of things that need to get fixed and that we need to sure up. But it's that time of the year, and that's what we're out there practicing for."

Nebraska will continue to prepare for April 16ths spring game when they take the practice field on Monday afternoon. Tickets for the spring game remain available on Huskers.com and through the NU Athletic Ticket Office at 1-800-8 BIG RED.

Turns out the kid has a turf toe problem. Sucks for him - the new offense is tailor made for guys with wheels (see Todd Reesing from Kansas - looked like an all star for two years).

Carnes is a redshirt freshman QB. Martinez better wow Bo this year - last year's starting nod means nothing at this point, as they're all learning a new system this year under Tim Beck.

Research universities group (AAU) ends UNL's membership

An association of 63 top research universities in the country has booted the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from the group.

The Association of American Universities' members voted to end UNL's membership recently based on the university's inability to meet certain requirements, Chancellor Harvey Perlman said in an email to faculty and staff Friday. The vote required a two-thirds majority of the group's 62 other members.

...

In an interview Friday, Perlman said he didn't think the AAU's decision would affect the university's efforts to garner research dollars or top faculty. He said it also likely wouldn't affect UNL's entry into the Big Ten Conference, a transition that officially takes place July 1.

However, Perlman admitted the university's membership in the AAU was likely a factor in the Big Ten's decision to invite UNL to join last year.

"I would assume it might have been (a factor) just because they're all AAU institutions," he said.

He said most of the 11 other Big Ten universities supported UNL's efforts to remain in the AAU, as well as all of the Big 12 universities.

"I honestly don't think it's going to change anything," he said. "I suppose it will be, in the short-term, an embarrassment."
