ND/Weis various topics

I suppose I am over-reacting to the Saint Charlie PR that I perceive in this press release. I suppose in retrospect that his behavior is not so much disgusting as it is disappointing to me and I do agree with the sentiment that you both express, awareness needs to be raised and he could be doing something different with his time.

He lost me when he said, "I mean, do I want to be successful? You know I have a passion for success." This effort is not about him.

Had he said, "I have so much respect for what my daughter faces and conquers every day in her life as a result of her special challenges," I would have gained a tremendous amount of respect for him and I would have reacted very differently.

A noble cause. At home, Weis faces what quite a few of us face: a child in life that has extra hurdles to jump, through no fault of their own.

As to Weis' character and temperament, we have seen several examples in public (self-promotion, bragging needlessly about his "ring"), of his narcissistic tendencies...alpha male and all of that. Weis' hubris will become self-evident over time, and, decide his public image.

I think the ND people are so desperate for "the old image", that they are encouraging every weapon in their arsenal to promote ND's one icon: ND football. Chuck is their man.

Mom of boy who called ND play dies

Posted: Friday May 26, 2006 6:55PM; Updated: Friday May 26, 2006 9:45PM

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- The mother of a boy granted a dying wish to call a football play for Notre Dame died eight months after her son.

Cathy Mazurkiewicz died Wednesday at 46 at her parents' home in Bodfish, Calif., of melanoma, said her daughter, Katrin Seymour. Mazurkiewicz' son, Montana, 10, died of inoperable brain cancer.

"Me and my sister were with her," Seymour said. "She took a few soft breaths, gave a smile, then she was gone."

Mazurkiewicz, the mother of six children, knew her health was failing when her son died but kept it quiet.

"When she was taking care of Montana she hardly had time to focus on her own illness," said Seymour, who lives in Alhambra, Calif., east of Los Angeles.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis visited Montana Mazurkiewicz in Mishawaka, outside South Bend, last September before Notre Dame played Washington. Weis asked if there was something he could do, and he agreed to let Montana call the first play against Washington. Montana called "pass right."

Weis called for a pass right on the first play of the game even though the Irish started on their own 1-yard line. Tight end Anthony Fasano caught the pass and leapt over a defender for a 13-yard gain.

Montana never got to see the play, though. He had died the day before.

Cathy Mazurkiewicz said after the game that she couldn't believe Weis called the play after the Irish started with their backs to the goal line.

"It was an amazing play. Montana would have been very pleased. I was very pleased," she said. "I was just so overwhelmed. I couldn't watch much more."

Notre Dame won the game at Seattle, 36-17.

Mazurkiewicz moved near Seymour shortly after Montana died.

Seymour said Mazurkiewicz was as big a fan of Notre Dame as Montana was.

"In fact she had two tattoos," she said.

Seymour said her mother's death came almost as a relief.

"She struggled for a long time with pain and disability," she said. "It was a blessing to see she was at peace."

A memorial service is planned for June 3, Seymour said.

Some insight into how Weis is viewed by his peers.

I picked up the Sporting News Big Ten Football preview magazine the other day. In it they also include their preview of Notre Dame. This is the magazine that for each team they include an assessment by an opposing coach. The coaches contributing are all anonymous but I found it very interesting reading what was said about Charlie Weis by this unnamed opposing coach. Here's what was quoted:

"Charlie Weis is arrogant as hell. I couldn't even talk to him before the game last year. I tried to. It was a one-sided conversation. After asking him about six different questions and getting little to no answer, I went to the other end of the field."

I believe this confirms what most of us already suspected. Charlie Weis is a pomp ass SOB that thinks he's above everyone else. That is about as classless as it gets when just prior to a game you essentially tell an opposing coach to "talk to the hand". I wonder if he did the same thing to JT?

When this guy falls he's gonna fall hard. I will root against them now probably even more than I root against scUM. Oh and guess what. The Sporting News also predicts Notre Lame will go 12-0 and be #1 in the nation as well. They predict Ohio State to win the Big Ten and go 11-1 losing at Austin. Michigan is predicted to finish tied for 2nd in the Big Ten with 9 wins and (what else) 3 losses as if we couldn't see that coming!

TSN always does this, and IMHO it's the best part of their mag. The preceeding quote doesn't sound at all like anything JT or Lloyd would say. That's either John L or Joe Tiller talking.

I have to agree with most people here...Weis is arrogant as hell, and heck, I might think bkb's assessment last page is pretty much accurate, but I look at the thing with his daughter much like Jim Kelly, Doug Flutie, and a number of other players wh have utilized their personal experiences to raise awareness for childhood illnesses/disorders. I've met Jim Kelly several times, and there wasn't an exploitative bone in his body, that's for sure. He loved his kid, and wanted to help other families. I have to give credit where it is due...every little bit helps, and if Weis and his personal experiences get rich ND alumni to contribute money somewhere, that's fine by me.

In case you guys haven't read any of the Big-10 preview done by the Sporting News, they voted Wisconsin as having the best fans in the Big-10. I couldn't believe it. I'd rank Wisconsin 4th. I think it as probably either John L that said that and if it was then that victory over ND must have been really satisfying.

Why do you think that, b/c they don't have a stadium that seats over 100,000?

I've been there and can tell you for a fact that they are the most ravenous fans I've ever come across.

Although some of it may have had to do with it being a night game playing the undefeated defending National Champs but I've heard they're that way all of the time.

A lot of it might have to do with what the rather arbitrary definition of "best" is.
