NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

Bill Dockery, the President of the Heisman Trust, being interviewed by Chris Fowler on College Football Live today.

BD - "We've determined, Chris, that there will be no winner of the 2005 Heisman Trophy."

CF - "What was the reasoning behind that decision, as opposed to trying to enable a re-vote, or give it to Vince Young, who was the runnerup that year?"

BD - "Well, the reasoning was that we're 5 years out on this, and we think it is too late to attempt to have a re-vote, and that things have changed since that time, and who would ever know where the votes would go if you remove Reggie from the picture."

He also said that the meeting between Reggie and the Heisman Trust was confidential, but that there was no indication given to Reggie as to how the Trust would vote.

Re: Reggie Bush relinquished his 2005 Heisman Trophy

1. Something tells me Reggie KNEW how the Heisman Trust was going to vote.

2. Back in 2005 I thougt Vince Young should have won the award over Bush. However, I agree with the trust, it's too late to revote and/or award it to Young now.

I'd be curious to see some sort of statistical breakdown between RB and VY from that year. I seem to recall RB winning it pretty soundly, but since VY won the game between them, people wanted to vote again or something. Just curious what their stats were like.

In just taking a quick glance at the stats (I'm not posting them, most people know how to use Google) - I'd say Vince Young had good stats, while Reggie Bush had GREAT stats. 8.7 yards per carry over 200 attempts sets him apart in my opinion.

The thing about Vince Young is... he had something that year that can't be quantified by statistics other than the win column - and even that doesn't quite do him justice. Reggie Bush won a lot of games too, but Young had a season where it was clear that in any situation, he was not going to be stopped, he was going to take his team on his shoulders and win the game. We all saw it firsthand when he beat Ohio State (and the season before when he beat M*ch*g*n in the Rose Bowl), but I don't think it crystallized for people until he beat USC. It's a whole different kind of greatness than what Bush had, and it's a kind of greatness that people who care about history and awards have a better appreciation for once it's realized.

All that said, I think the decision to vacate that year's award rather than giving it to Young is the right decision. If Young not winning the award is a perceived wrong that needs to be corrected, then this isn't the way to do it. The right way would be to move Heisman votes and ceremonies to the real conclusion of the season in mid-January. College football has changed since the inception of this award, and the Heisman Trophy needs to evolve along with it.

I think Lendale White rushing for 1,300+ on that team says a lot as well. How much of that rushing success was due to the line?

I have a feeling Pittman would have put up numbers closer to Bush's as well if he had played for USC.

Didn't Young pass for over 3,000 yds and rush for over 1,000 yds that year? That's pretty great IMO.
