Pierce says ?great chance? he?ll play in Game 2
By TOM WITHERS, AP Sports Writer Jun 6, 2:27 pm EDT
BOSTON (AP)?Paul Pierce, whose dramatic return from a knee injury lifted Boston to a win in over Los Angeles in the opener of the NBA finals, said Friday there?s a ?great chance? he?ll play in Game 2 on Sunday.
Pierce was carried from the floor by teammates and carted to the locker room in a wheelchair in the third quarter Thursday night. However, he returned moments later despite a sprained right knee. After coming back, Pierce made two 3-pointers to give the Celtics the lead for good and finished with 22 points as the Celtics beat the Lakers 98-88.
Pierce said his knee was stiff and swollen. He will not practice over the next two days to get treatments.
The 10-year veteran described his injury as a ?sharp pain? in his knee. He plans to put off an MRI until after the season.

Dubious Reed: Jackson questions Pierce?s injury
By Johnny Ludden, Yahoo! Sports 8 hours, 43 minutes ago
BOSTON ? Having gone from Brian Scalabrine?s arms to wheelchair to scorer?s table to NBA legend in about, oh, seven minutes, Paul Pierce?s miraculous recovery continued another day. He complained his right knee was stiff and sore, said he likely wouldn?t have been able to play Friday and then, when asked to assess his chances of starting Sunday?s Game 2 of the NBA Finals, the Boston Celtics star forward didn?t hesitate with his answer.
?I think there?s a great chance I?ll play,? he said.
Some 12 hours earlier Pierce also claimed to have been touched by an angel, and that was the first sign something might be amiss.
After all, does anyone believe Michael Landon was really a Celtics fan?
More than a couple of the Los Angeles Lakers have rolled their eyes over Pierce?s dramatic performance in the Finals? opening game, no one more than their coach. Asked about Pierce?s ?Willis Reed moment,? Phil Jackson smiled.

After giving up 98 points in Thursday's Game 1 loss, it is time for Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and the rest of the Lakers to turn their attention to the defensive side of the court.

Defensive Improvements the Key For the Lakers

BOSTON -- With a day to simmer on it, this much about Game 1 is clear: It was there for the taking, and L.A. didn't take it.
Two starters checked out with injuries, including the Celtics' leading scorer, the Lakers had a five-point halftime lead, and Boston wasn't making its threes (6-of-19). Even so, L.A. missed out on a great chance to get the one road win (at a minimum) it needs to take the series.
There are many reasons the Lakers failed -- Paul Pierce's big shots and Kobe Bryant's struggles were huge factors, obviously, that deserved the attention they received.
What we've discussed very little, however, is the fact that L.A. just didn't defend well, and will need to do a much better job in order to win Game 2.
