NBA Discussion (Official Thread)

I have 22 million reasons to not give a damn about the plight of the average NBA player.

I view the owners slightly differently considering they are ones that are primary in providing the experience to the fans. Plus, I think most of them made their money the old-fashioned way.
The average NBA player is overpayed, get rid of that you get rid of all the stupid contracts we've seen.

Considering Donald Sterling and the Maloof brothers are owners, I don't think we should view them too greatly. On top of that, no one wants to buy the Hornets, so it's not like people want to own an NBA team. Almost all of them aren't making money (excluding the Laker's, Celtic's, Knick's of the league).

Basically, the way I see it, the only predicament the players are involved in is the owner's think they get way too big of contracts. Yet, the stupid owners sign these high contracts and it catches on that the other owners have play ball and sign a few bad contracts otherwise they'll be left behind.

On top of all of this, the owner's will MAKE money if there is no season, so why would they want a season?

Goes to point out what a superior job the NFL does with its players, making sure they know what investment options are available and providing financial planning assistance.

I like Stern, but he could do much more to help the players take better care of their futures. It's not like many of them come out of backgrounds where their daddies and their daddies' friends were stockbrokers.

Or unfortunately, where their daddies were even known to them. :(
The fact that a significant number of players are college graduates, or at least were in school for 3 years, I think, also helps the NFL on this metric. I know I am not the guy who argues in favor of "student athlete" but... fact is, NFL players, pound for pound, have a better level of education.

They started a part to the Rookie welcoming program that lectures them on how to store their money. That's atleast a start.

FWIW, this has been the case for some time. September 1995 I stayed at the Disney Marriott in Orlando during the same time that the NBA rookies were their for their orientation. A number of the seminars were about financial management.

Burn baby, burn!

I'm all for this lasting for several years... but I hate this for those low level employees who will likely lose their jobs because of this.....fuck the players... meh owners don't really have a beef with them except they got themselves into this mess, and like other sports have idiot GMs who overpay.

Very true. Not to mention the small businesses (restaurants, bars, etc.) that are losing money due to the lack of games in the nearby arenas.

Just curious, if the NBA season is cancelled, which team gets the #1 pick (possibly the guy pictured below) in the draft next year?

Obviously he made the right decision to not declare for the draft this past year (2011).
