NBA Discussion (Official Thread)

The NBA players have no bargaining power just like they didn't have it last time. The vast majority of its members can't afford a protracted lock out and the owners can, simple as that. They'll break.

The players may break, but the players union bosses won't....

I'll find the story about how the NBAPA boss dodged the question badly somewhere....

Havin a posse aint cheap, yo.

I'll just say I'm willing to wager the NBA has the lowest savings rate per player of any major professional sport. I'd also throw a side bet on them leading the pack in child support obligations.

2 + 2 and I say the rank and file NBAPA will be putting tremendous pressure on their bosses to get the paychecks flowing again asap.

Do you not consider the players to have any fault in this situation?

The players are at some faults. However, when you have organizations giving Rashard Lewis the money he is making and giving Gilbert Arenas a crazy contract.....how can you now go after the owners? Shit, Washington sucked with Arenas, how about just saving that money and suck with the players you have. If you don't think a player is worth the investment.......then don't sign his ass. Look at Sprewell. They said you don't want the offer, then fuck off and I don't think he ever caught on. He missed out on $21 million over 3 years for acting stupid. Now the players need to realize that organizations do need money to operate and they need the pie the most. Better decisions on signing players seem to be at a fault for alot of organizations.

I heard something on the radio last year, maybe 2 years ago, that something on the order of 85% of NBA players retire without a penny saved. Considering the salaries these people make....

My statement wasn't to give Stern and the owners any amount of credence. Simply balancing the idiocy between both groups. I view them much like I do Congress.

What's amazing is that the NBA ratings were up alot this past season. They are going to fuck it up even more with the fans. I just wish the games would go back on NBC instead of ESPN just like the 90s that I grew up with. Good times.

When the Cleveland Cavs sellout every game in 2008 and still lose 8 mill, the system is broke.

Is it there fault for perpetuating a bad system? Yeah, but I don't feel like they're the problem. If they're preventing a new CBA that lowers the middle class salary and distributes it to (mostly) top class players and some to lower class players, or otherwise redistributes salaries more appropriately, then yeah it's they own some of the fault. But this is low on the totem pole that is the NBA's problems.

Here's how I look at it:

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/NBA-leads-world-in-average-player-salary-042211

The NBA rewards its players with the highest average earnings in global sport, researchers revealed Friday.

The basketball stars get an average of $4.79 million per year or $92,199 per week, sportingintelligence.com said.

Coupled with:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_average_NBA_career_length

As of the 2007/2008 season the average NBA players experience which can be likened to their career length was 4.71 years.

I have 22 million reasons to not give a damn about the plight of the average NBA player.

I view the owners slightly differently considering they are ones that are primary in providing the experience to the fans. Plus, I think most of them made their money the old-fashioned way.

Goes to point out what a superior job the NFL does with its players, making sure they know what investment options are available and providing financial planning assistance.

I like Stern, but he could do much more to help the players take better care of their futures. It's not like many of them come out of backgrounds where their daddies and their daddies' friends were stockbrokers.

Or unfortunately, where their daddies were even known to them. :(
