Quick thoughts on the game from the perspective of only seeing it once, plus reading the box score. Pleasantly surprised to see Saine get as many touches as he did, and perform well. Watching it live, it seemed that Saine got more carries than Boom, but the box says otherwise. Regardless, it looks like we have a #1 and #1A RB this season. Like Saine getting passes out of the backfield. Was also pleased by the number of screen and flat RB passes. Where was that during the Mo Wells years?
Pryor looked good, but I still think he needs to make reads quicker. There were a couple of plays where he was lucky not to get picked off because of a late throw. On certain routes, the ball needs to be in the air before the WR make his cut, otherwise the DB has a chance to break on the ball. I'm sure he'll see it in the film room this week. TP was definitely limited by the play calling this game, it was almost like a scrimmage for him. I expect that the coaches will loosen the reins for USC, and let him use all of his tools. His INT was nothing to worry about, went thru the WR's hands, defender was in the right place.
Regarding the 4th and 2 play, I thought they should have taken the points, but if they are going to go for it, they should put it in TP's hands. Give him an option pitch, a couple of WR routes, and let him decide to keep it or not. I'm sure he could have picked up the 1st, had the hand-off not been called.
Defense looked good, all things considered. A couple of costly miscues, but the trip option lived up to it's billing. Not only does Navy run a specialized offense that's hard to defend, but they run it better than anyone else at this point in time. I was very impressed with their execution, and Dobbs in particular. One thing about the trip option, when there is a missed assignment, everyone around the play is engaged with a blocker. That's why there were big plays, it's hard to get help on D. Coleman played his ass off, and while I don't think he will be that effective every week, he looks like the kind of leader that will make big plays when we need it. Also impressed by Rolle. There were plays where it looked like he was shot out of a cannon towards the ball carrier. Some plays he wasn't as effective, but a good showing for his first start. The middle of the line and pass coverage were suspect at times, but I chalk that up to defending the option as well. As someone alluded to earlier, holding Navy to under 200 rushing yds is no small feat. Add in that they changed their stripes quite a bit by passing more, and it was a tough task for our D.
The O-line was not as good as I had hoped, but not bad. IIRC, the times that TP was pressured had more to do with RBs or TEs missing their blitz pickups, but I may be wrong. Would have definitely liked to see better run blocking.
Overall, we were a couple of somewhat flukey plays from a solid win. Add in that Tressel had no intention of running it up on an academy, and the limited offensive playbook; and it was nothing to worry about. A friend who was at the game told me that there were only six offensive plays run by us all game. That doesn't ring true for me, but there is definitely not a lot for USC to look at for next week. Personally, I like that the team will be going into this week thinking that they have a lot to work on. In the end, it goes in the win column, and that's all that matters until kickoff on 9/12.
