Ratings =/= ad revenue

Right?

That's what's different now, I think.

But less people giving a shit is bad. Macro and Micro.

If the ultimate model marginalizes (further) B1G west/the scraps of BigXII / non coastal PAC country, this is..... Bad. Especially if Atlantic coast B1G and ACC never cared that much to start.

There aren't that many phil knights out there.

I don't think the networks and the schools and the advertisers care more about eyeballs than about dollars.

They'd take the revenue over the ratings any day.

They'd be stupid not to...

Well, yeah... my original point being that $$$ is what matters, ultimately. To everybody.
Right. And there is an assumption that the "$$$" is an unstoppable upward trend.

I would argue that there are key indicators that already isn't the case. Further, my opinion is that will accelerate

Lots of people watch lots of college football games and root for teams that don't have a snowballs chance in hell of winning a conference division nevermind a P5 title or a playoff spot

Why is that?

I think we are pretty much saying the same thing here. The brands are hugely popular. People love college football. Making a tweak to legal structure so that the football team can be paid as employees, collectively bargained with etc to give some structure and control to NIL/transfer portal wild west isn't going to drive them away from college football (I wouldn't think).

They'd be rooting for the exact same players, exact same team, logo, colors, stadium etc. The players would technically be professionals, who are just focused on seeing how far they can get with their unique athletic ability and would go to school at some other point in their lives (in this what if scenario I am throwing out).

No price to pay for fans at all, the game stays healthy, the 12 team playoff is here so on and so forth. The game of CFB would be better than ever in most regards. Some diehards might be put off by the players being professionals and not the idealized student athlete but that has been a highly debatable reality for a very long time.

Fair enough.

Though I wasn't implying, at least intentionally, that the upward trend of revenue is unstoppable. I was just saying that the revenue is the only indicator that matters.

And, if and when the revenue growth slows down, or stops, or even reverses the advertisers will move on to fluffing somebody else.

I'm ok with kids making money off their name but this isn't that.

Sucks but it's probably not changing. So better adapt.
This system is what you get when you don't actually take the reality of the situation into account and let the courts force it on you.

If you would would have built one yourself 10-20 years ago you probably could have still had guardrails but no you were dragged in kicking and screaming.
