I'd tend to agree with Worm on this one, although it's difficult to compare them for a variety of reasons. 2 seasons vs. 1 season, being in competition with Pittman vs. being in competition with Ross, and different injury situations. All that said, I think that while Beanie Wells as a sophomore is probably comparable to Clarett as a freshman, when comparing them both as freshmen, Clarett was superior. Which isn't meant to detract from Wells; he was very, very good as a freshman, but Clarett was phenomenal. You could make a case that Clarett, as a true freshman, was the best tailback in college, at least when healthy. I'd probably go with Mcgahee, but Clarett would certainly be in the discussion. I'd have a hard time thinking of another true freshman tailback you could say that about since Herschel Walker. And there's no reason to believe that, had he had his head screwed on straight and played as a sophomore, he wouldn't have improved as well.

Not to get too off topic, but I remember Cryami players saying that thier scout team running back was better than our starter. Frank Gore was thier scout team back. I don't think he was better, but he turned out pretty good.

Whoa.. I must be losing it..

I don't remember Krenzel totalling up more than Troy did. Although, IMO the BT was better in 06 than they were in 02, and we had a better year in 02 anyway, so it's hard to compare.

Anyway, yea, I'll still stay with my previous answer-

Beanie > Mo

Actually, if you check the stats...

1. Clarett's production in 2002 > Pittman's production in 2006.
2. Lydell Ross' production in 2002 > Beanie's production in 2006.
3. Maurice Hall's production in 2002 > Mo Wells' production in 2006.
4. Krenzel's rushing yardage total in 2002 > Troy Smith's rushing yardage total in 2006.

The 4 above from 02 outgained the 4 above from 06 by 400+ yards & 8 TDs. Clarett wore defenses down from the start, while Beanie had the luxury of running against tired defenses when he was put in. If anything, Beanie had the bigger benefit of timing. He played a few games with a messed up ankle, and Clarett played a few while suffering from a stinger. The 02 Bucks also beat a team that was better than the one that the 06 Bucks eventually lost big to.

Stats from both years can be found by clicking on the links below.

The 2002 team also had 1 more game to get those stats in..

1. True.
2. Ross had nearly double Beanie's carries yet had just a 67 more yards.
3. Hall had double the carries of Maurice.
4. Krenzel had more than double Troy's carries.

So for most of these the only reason they had more was because they had nearly double the amount of carries as the other guy and also had one more game to do it in.

Hate to say it, but I seriously doubt that. No offense, but he's 0-2, and on some loaded teams.
I'm not sure I follow your reasoning on that one. The fact that the '06 Buckeye team imploded at the worst possible moment has very little to do with Chris Wells, and absolutely nothing to do with the '03 Buckeye team. Same with the '07 team, except that they didn't exactly implode.

At any rate, (sophomore) Chris Wells on the '03 team obviously wouldn't guarantee a national championship, but I think it would give a very legitimate shot to a team that wasn't far off of championship caliber, and principally was only lacking a top-shelf tailback. Arguably not as good a shot as sophomore Clarett would have given them, but a very legitimate one nonetheless.

Beanie for me again but, close and scum coach CARR even said Wells was the best RB the big ten had during his years. eventhough, I loved convicts forced fumble of sean taylors return. I still think that play won the national title.
