MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

I like MLB baseball, but I'm so tired of greedy asshole owners like the Dolans, and I'm so tired of the league refusing to implement a salary cap and floor to force the shit owners to actually try to compete.

Since Cleveland ownership is hellbent on sucking the fun out of being a fan of their franchise in order to maximize profit, I'm not going to follow them again until they get management who spends like they want to win.

If you're giving up on the Indians ... er ...Guardians, the Reds are looking for fans.
I mean, literally, they're looking and can't find any ...

The changes to the game don't bother me. Not playing the games is quite disappointing, not going to lie.

After all this COVID disruption to our lives, it's really a bad timing for MLB/MLBPA to pull this. A "normal" spring would damn sure of been nice.

I know business is business and I don't begrudge them their money or judge them for fighting to get theirs, as it were. My frustration comes from them having such a low level of trust between the two organizations that they can't solve any CBA issues without a work stoppage. That's poor leadership on both sides and a breathtaking lack of awareness among the rank and file of both sides. A couple of thousand people can't divvy up billions without having to use lockouts and strikes? Absurd.

ok, I’ll be the picky prick who points out that you probably meant ‘94, not ‘95. In ‘94 the players walked out on strike in early August. World Series was cancelled.

No agreement was reached over the winter and ‘95 Spring Training started with replacement players. Players and owners settled in early April and season was delayed until the regular players completed a second Spring Training. The ‘95 season concluded with the Indians losing to the Braves in the World Series.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel this dumbfucks have no idea what they are doing to themselves and the sport. Television rights via the RSNs is a major revenue stream for the sport and that stream is tanking. Financially they're heading for a meltdown. When Disney sold the RSNs, they originally wanted $20 billion for them, but only got 10. Since the onset of "cord cutting" the old model of "you'll get cable and pay what we tell you or you get nothing" is coming home to roost for them. Some teams, who saw RSNs as a golden goose, signed long term (read: 20 years) contracts, some of which are only half over. With each person who "cuts the cord" they lose more money and the value of the RSNs decreases.

Baseball was headed for a financial crisis BEFORE these idiots (who must still be living in the past) decided to fuck the game up even more.

This won't end well for them.

It sucks because it's such a great sport.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Manfred may actually be the worst commissioner of all major North American sport leagues. Even worse than Goodell, a feat that I had previously thought was impossible.

And they've fucked themselves in other ways too. In an effort to totally press their monopoly, they set up these insane rules to control who watches their product and in the process alienated their customers. I mean, you can get a subscription to stream all MLB games from MLB.tv EXCEPT THE HOME TEAM. That's the vast majority! If I relied on non-fans of the home team to make money...well...that's not what I consider a good business model.
