MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

It sucks because it's such a great sport.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Manfred may actually be the worst commissioner of all major North American sport leagues. Even worse than Goodell, a feat that I had previously thought was impossible.
I can't disagree. Say what you want about the NFL, but they control their product as a group. Even distribution of funds, all TV contracts negotiated for the good of the whole. Competitive balance goes as far as intelligent moves (and maybe a little luck) takes them.

Now, let's look at baseball. I have no confidence that Cleveland will ever be in a situation to win the championship. And even if somehow it does happen, it won't be sustainable.

Here is what I'm talking about

https://www.techdirt.com/2021/10/19...es-in-market-even-without-cable-subscription/

In 2019, Sinclair’s Diamond Sports subsidiary paid $9.6 billion for the Fox Regional Sports Networks, since rebranded to Bally’s, giving it exclusive rights to the 14 MLB teams, 16 NBA teams, and 12 NHL teams. It borrowed a staggering $8 billion to fund the deal, sources said. Since then, Dish, Hulu and YouTube TV have stopped carrying the Bally’s RSNs, even as revenue from existing distribution deals has been slammed by cord cutting and subscriber declines. An August Moody’s Investors Service report found that Sinclair “now has an unsustainable capital structure given its very high leverage and weak liquidity.”

And they've fucked themselves in other ways too. In an effort to totally press their monopoly, they set up these insane rules to control who watches their product and in the process alienated their customers. I mean, you can get a subscription to stream all MLB games from MLB.tv EXCEPT THE HOME TEAM. That's the vast majority! If I relied on non-fans of the home team to make money...well...that's not what I consider a good business model.
The blackout rules are so bad with MLB.

And they fail to embrace social media buzz by often blocking people that share clips. Meanwhile I can scroll my feed and catch all kinds of cool dunks/passes/shots from the NBA shared by all kinds of random people every night.

If something cool happens, let the world see it! Grow the game.

Spot on. Ticket prices need to be cheaper too. Pack the stadium every game. Make lifelong fans. But no, price out the regular guy, and force him to deal with cable companies to watch it on tv. Just stupid

They still run things like it's 1996. Kind of like how Jerry Jones runs the Cowboys, and it's working really well for both entities.

Yeah! MLB tix should be cheap just like NFL, NBA, concert and other tix are …..ummmm…… Well, let’s just bitch about the blackout rules then!
Dude, the NHL and NBA are a different paradigm. The number of games, the pace of the game, size of the stadiums, etc, etc. I'm not saying to give away tickets, just maybe, I don't know, allow an average family to go without taking out a 2nd fucking mortgage.

But that might just be me.

The National League adopts the designated hitter starting this season

I guess that was inevitable, but still.......

I just hope 7 inning games and a man on 2nd base in extra innings are things of the past. For consistency I do think they need to use a "Robo Ump" to call balls and strikes though.
